Re: is soldering dangerous?

Solder melting temperatures will not turn metal into a gas that can be inhaled.
Touching the solder however will get lead on your hands so you should wash up afterwards. The smoke from soldering is the flux burning off, flux is a cleaning agent that prevent oxidization of the surfaces to be soldered. If these surfaces are allowed to oxidize, the solder will not bond properly or flow nicely. Most electronic solders have a rosin core flux embedded inside the solder itself. Generally speaking there are 3 types of flux for electronics with tin/lead solder; Rosin Core (R), Rosin Mildly Active (RMA) and Rosin Active (RA). These really aren't toxic to my recollection. For good soldering you should use eutectic solder (63/37) over the cheaper 60/40 solder. Never use RA flux, it stays active after heating and if not properly cleaned can eat away at the metals you soldered over time.

Re: is soldering dangerous?

Not dangerous. There will be the occasional burn. Some people are allergic to some fluxes. That's about it.

Re: is soldering dangerous?

inhaling is bad, in the case of solder that is dropping hot ass molten solder on yourself is very bad M'KAY. on a more serious note though, i suggest you wear a doctors mask, at least that's what i do

Re: is soldering dangerous?

I was soldering for like 2 hours, but most of the time I was just sitting trying to do the wiring and so. I inhaled the fumes lets say about 6 times i guess it's not too bad, but I touched my mouth afterwards as a contemplating position

Re: is soldering dangerous?

Let's see now...

Heat.
Molten lead.
Toxic fumes.
What could possibly go wrong?

The only thing I can think of is if you are soldering something
that you tried to stick together with crazy glue first.
The crazy glue will vaporize and if you get the vapors in your
eyes and blink you will not be able to open your eyes back up.

Other than that.................

You need to wash away those fumes with a gallon of vodka. You'll be fine afterwards.

I solder all day long. I'm a tech, people bring me broke amps and stuff and I solder in good parts. Every day. Yeah, flux fumes are sucky and stinky, especially some of the ones from the fifties and the old Japanese stereos of the seventies, they had stinky flux. Don't breath it a lot and you'll be fine. Like I said, some people are allergic. You'd know by now if you were.

The lead is not vaporized at those temperatures you won't be inhaling it. Just don't use your soldering iron as an immersion heater to keep your coffee warm or light cigarettes with it and you'll be fine.

I've been working with lead solder for years and my brain is still mybrains itll ambarihn isitill juat like aa smaty as ever.

Really, soldering is not a high risk activity-just don't eat the solder. I stubbornly refuse solder without lead in its alloy. You know, being born in the 1940's is pretty good. So many of us have survived in spite of all the risks we took. Then I doubled down and I can more or less walk OK with a more apparent limp than I thought and it goes on. I am glad my daughter takes no chances with my grandson-safety seats, etc., and he still laughs most all day every day.

Re: is soldering dangerous?

All the key points have already been made, but I'll reinforce them. Lead doesn't vaporize at those temps, so you won't inhale the lead. You'll get lead in you by ingesting it. Never put solder in your mouth, don't eat and drink at the workbench. Wash your hands regularly.

In other words, pretend the solder is dog doo doo or something similar you don't want to eat.

Based on the fact that I'm not dead yet, and have been soldering for 35 years, exposure to some vaporized and burned flux fumes is not going to hurt you for the occasional exposure.

I try to avoid having the smoke get in my face. A fan can be handy to blow the smoke away. A gentle breeze is all you need, you don't want the fan cooling the work.

Also, lots of smoke means you are burning the flux. Burned flux means your iron is too hot. Though sometimes when soldering a large thing like a ground wire to a pot body, you need the iron to start out too hot, as it will cool quickly on touching the larger body.

Temperature controlled irons are better in this regard.

I've actually lit cigarettes off of mine before... not tried the coffee thing though, might be bad for the iron.

Re: is soldering dangerous?

Just remember that even low wattage irons are not like pens and pencils.

1) Don't thoughtfully tap your teeth or lips while pondering what to do next.
2) Don't try and park it behind your ear.
3) Don't show off and shove two up your nose...the face you make at your little brother will be something way beyond what two pencils will do.
4) A hot iron probably will not do your pencil sharpener any good.
