Re: Aging Plastic & Metal Parts ??

Here's an experiment I did with one of my strats. It came stock with white bell knobs and white pup covers. I wanted to change it up a bit so I bought cream ones but they looked orangish instead. So I decided to try and age the look of the white pup covers and keep the cream knobs.

I started by sanding them with 1000 grit sandpaper, then finished with steel wool. I roughed the knobs up a bit with pliers and made some scratches in the pup covers. I then applied Old English dark wood stain to them and finished with a light spray coat of satin lacquer.

I don't know yet if I like it or not. I may try again to see if I get a better outcome. If I do I still have the pickguard that will need done to match them.

New orangish knob and pup cover with stock white knob

After the vintage treatment

Installed, not a good pic though

Not too bad Bobbo. It's a satin laquer so it's hardly noticeable. Here's the thing though, the knobs and pup covers are two different colors. So, I think I am going to do the white bell knobs that came stock with the strat and they should match up to the pups pretty good. Then all I will have left to do is the pickguard. I'll post pics again when I get done.

Bobbo,

Looks good! Now take all your screws, scuff them up with some steel wool, and put them in a bowl filled with water, when the water evaporates, you will have some authentic rust on them.
cheers,
Roman

BOBBO,

Not to solicit...but have you still got your Historic plastic (Switchwasher, jackplate, and pickguard)? I need a matching set because someone's building me a guitar. Now who could that be...? Thanks.

yeah that works a gem.....put some salt in there too and it speeds things up...put in some brand new shiny screws, about 6 hours in the sun and they came out looking 50 years old - amazing!!

Re: Aging Plastic & Metal Parts ??

Did the shoe polish leave the surfaces streaky feeling, or any scent? I polish my boots with kiwi quite a bit and it's real squeeky and very strong smelling.

No .. It didn't leave it streaky because i buffed it off well !!! Most of the color that was there at first has faded away due to UV rays ... But it did take that brand new edge off certain things , I also used it to take the newness of my new celluloid inlays !!!

I actually aged my parts-o-caster and all the parts..

I used a technique I devised with balsamic vinegar, that I heated in a fry pan, covered the heads, and then used etchant solution to aged them further...
I soaked the pup covers in coffee and tea, and used brown kiwi polish on the pickgaurd.
