Re-shaping neck
I bought this travel guitar for a trip to Mexico, but I don't like the neck. It's a baseball bat... I like thin necks.
So, I went to HomeDepot and got some 180, 220 and 400 sandpaper thinking I'd just start sanding away. Do you guys have any advice before I begin? |

Re: Re-shaping neck
You`ll want to start off with 80 grit,, the 180 will take forever to work the neck down, I used my palm sander to take mine down, just take it down a little at a time and check it often for feel.

I started it last night. Started with the 180 and went to the 400. The 180 did an ok job of taking it off. I picked up a dry wall hand sander to wrap the sandpaper around so I would sand flat. I guess sanding blocks are no longer used? I couldn't find one at any hardware store. But with that I was able to take a lot of quickly. A lot more than if I was just using my hand. I stopped last night once I felt I took an ok amount off. I still think it could go thinner, but I wanted to sleep on it. You can always sand away neck, can't really add more to it. |

Re: Re-shaping neck
USually a walmart carries the block sanders back in the paint dept. Alot of times if you lay the neck down and look at the back of it like a clock removing wood from the 10 o`clock and 2 o`clock areas will make a big difference in feel. Without knowing how deeply the truss rod groove was routed in the neck you have to be careful how much of the very center you remove or you could wind up opening up the truss rod cavity. Thats why i mentioned just trying the 10-2 areas of the neck for the majority of the sand down.
