Re: Who Makes the Best ! Repro Gibson 50's Plastic ?

DMC for me.
However,I looked at the Vintage Clone parts from Historic Makeovers at the Arlington show and they look fantastic.

DMC parts:M69 rings,pickup covers,R/T ring,nut and tip,pointer washers.
Allparts:Replica pickguard,reflector knobs(gold insert).They look silver in the pic but,are light gold.
Pigtail:ABR-1,studs and tailpiece.
Pickups are Wolfetone DR. V's
Pots and caps are Rick Norman's Dr. Vintage Early Spec kit.

'07 R0.

DMC: R/T ring,nut and tip.
Pigtail:studs
Pickups are Wolfetone Dr. V's
NOS Russian PIO .022uf caps and stock pots(soon to be Rick's Dr.Vintage kit)

'06 R0.

Generally speaking, DMC has the best parts if you're going for vintage accuracy.

I was under that impression too until taking a close look at some of the DMC hardware !! If so take a good look at the toggle switch nut , The DMC version is too pointy at the tips and not flat enough on the knurls ! I got a set of the DMC single line single ring tuners and the buttons had no swirl , color was ok but vintage Klusons had swirly buttons ! I recently replaced my DMC toggle nut with the one from Fatboy ! It has the vintage correct specs and look ! I then changed the tuner buttons to Uncle Lou's ! Now they look right !

DMC isn't perfect, but overall they're the best. It's true that some other companies have nailed certain parts better. If you want the best plastic you're going to have to mix and match.

Re: Who Makes the Best ! Repro Gibson 50's Plastic ?

BOBBO,yeah I see what the diff is.
My aged DMC nut on my '07 is closer to the Fatboy than the DMC nut you have pictured.
The non aged DMC nut that's on my '06 is like the DMC nut you have.
Interesting.
My '06 R0 with the non aged DMC R/T ring and nut.I also just put the Historic Makeovers Vintage Clone switch tip on there.
[IMG][/IMG]
Perhaps there are two versions of DMC nuts?
The DMC tuner tips you had don't look very good IMO.
Uncle Lou's look way better.
Did you just get the DMC tuner tips or the whole DMC tuners?
One the DMC site the show the tuners and they look fantastic.
Very different from what you have.
DMC tuners.

I make my own pickguards. Takes me about 10 minutes. Bottom one is a Historic guard, top one is mine.

Re: Who Makes the Best ! Repro Gibson 50's Plastic ?

I'd have to make a routing template. It's just cream plastic sheets from Allparts. Don't know why Gibson has such a funky color on their guards.

...a '69 P-90 pick guard is the same as an R6 pick guard, even the screw hole at the neck matches...If you get around to doing any, give me a holler,I'd like one...

I've used a variety of vintage-like parts, but I like to age them a bit using alcohol-based stain, like these from Stew Mac.....

ColorTone Concentrated Liquid Stains at Stewart-MacDonald

Practice on some scrap plastic like an old white pickguard. I like to mix the color really strong into some denatured alcohol. Wipe or airbrush it onto the part(s), and then buff the excess stain off/out of the plastic until you get the desired effect your looking for. I use 3M Finnesse It or Meguiar's Mirror Glaze to polish plastic parts.

Mike
