Usually these are the 2 most common ways of wiring it:

Frampton/e -

Or the one I prefer, which is the standard Gibson - Bridge / Bridge + Middle / Neck -

The mid position(Br + Mid) gives you an OOPish tone.
There are a myriad of tones to be found in both of these wiring options.
3 pups = tonal nirvana for me.

Re: Faux middle pickup help

I understand all the whining about the mid pup getting in the way,up to an extent.
Which is anywhere from 30mins - to an hour of solidly playing with the damn thing instead of giving up on it.
Plug in and wind the amp up. Play around with the pup switch and turn those freakn control knobs. You will love it.
If not...I'm sorry for your loss.

I hated a Strat, the first time I picked one up,for the very same reason(not to mention the vol. knob I kept hitting) but after some time with it...all good.

Shit,if I bitched about the strings giving me blisters and making my fingers bleed,I'd be playing a freakn triangle by now

Also,I've always found the best tone to be had from a mid pup,is when it's dropped down level or even below, the pup ring. Makes it very hard to come into contact with, set up that way...

Although, saying all that. If it ain't for you?...then it ain't for you.

Dime it.

Re: Faux middle pickup help

I lowered the middle pup just a little on my 3 pup 70's reissue. Had zero problems picking. And I'm the digging in type of player. So I'm good with that middle pup.

Re: Faux middle pickup help

In regards to your question on the finish since nobody really went into depth there is a little trick I got from an old old school painter. For the area where you are going to install the third pickup should you go that route. Cover the area with a layer or two of that green painters tape. It doesn't leave nasty residue on the finish of your guitar and it will hold down all the exsisting finish giving you better odds at escaping without any cracks or blemishes in your finish.

As for the three pickup idea, I think its pretty awesome, then again a Black Beauty 3 is HIGH up on my list of guitars to purchase, so I am kinda for the whole three pickup thing, not sure if I would mod my guitar to have it but you gotta do what floats your boat and makes you happy not other people. Rock On.

I had this kill switch professionally installed for $125...probably similar to that amount. Noll Guitars, Cranston, Rhode Island. Highly recommended!

Instead of rocking the pickup toggle, I can slap the button, like Eddie. So first Eddie copied two handed tapping from Ace, now the kill switch. Go Ace!!!

Re: Faux middle pickup help

I'm all for the fake faux middle pup - It will give it the Ace look without too much expense.

Just be sure to have a Super-D in the bridge; and you're good to go.

Re: Faux middle pickup help

A lot can depend on how hot the pickup you use is as well (for the style of music you want to play.) Obviously, you want a certain volume from the pickup, which necessitates whether you raise of lower it. The oscillation of the strings is greater over the neck pup than the bridge, so the sound is louder. For this reason, pickups near the bridge tend to be set higher than those in the neck.

Having said that, I have a set of very hot pickups in my LP an SG. The SG is 17.5k in the bridge and almost 10k in the neck. Because the pup are much louder, they sound better if lowered further from the strings then a normal pickup would be. Also, because the bridge pup is much stronger than the neck pup, the volume is balanced when they are at approximately the same height, rather than having the bridge closer to the strings.

Selecting the correct pickup for the middle position could easily allow you to set it low in the ring, thus minimizing contact with the pick.

Re: Faux middle pickup help

faux pickup - use double sided tape

About whether the 3rd pup will get in the way - its odd, I have 2 x 3pup customs and on 1 of them the middle pup does get in the way a bit, on the other one it doesnt get in the way at all.

I think it may have more to do with how that particular top was carved on that individual guitar.
