Set Neck Les Paul "Kit"

Considering a new project and would like to know if anyone sells a decent set-neck LP style kit?

Thanks.

Thanks.

I found a company that offers more options (solid mahogany, maple caps, ebony or maple fretboards, etc..) and they're here in the US.

StarPower Guitars

Might be worth looking into.

SPG - Our Guitars Rock!!

i heard its hard to work with but i love spalted maple tops on LPs and explorers. with the right tobacco burst they are just as good looking as any flame/quilt you throw at it

let me know if you pull the trigger on it. too bad that the lpc kit has a rosewood board.

spalted maple is okay to work with, just seal it with epoxy and you're good to go.

Will do!
I'd like to go with the all mahogany body and ebony board but so far, they haven't responded to my emails requesting pricing and instructions on how to order. I'll let you know if I hear anything back from them though.

How's that LP project of yours coming along?
Did you get that Marine Tex yet?
Just curious how that's working out for you.

I kinda screwed my epis finish so i wanted to start by repainting but am kinda put off by thinknig ill really screw up,so maybe ill try on something cheaper.

Re: Set Neck Les Paul "Kit"

cool, bout how many have you done? Ill probly get started on my first project in a while...i want to get back to playing again once i finish with my epis electronics lol. What would you suggest for a place to get some decent necks and bodies for a decent price? That way if i really mess up it wouldnt be a really big loss. What did you start on?

Dino or anyone looking if you have any input on this stuff please tell to!

Re: Set Neck Les Paul "Kit"

eh, i've probably done about 10-12 guitars +/-. if you want to start with some projects on the cheap, i'd recommend picking up some mighty mite strat style stuff. you can get finished bodies at various places online for not a lot of money. you can find some ideas here, if you like: Guitar Parts Online, parts for your guitar or bass, pickups, hardware, wiring and all your guitar part needs - Guitar Parts Online

anyway, the mighty mite stuff is on par with squier stuff, but it's a nice way to get started and learn how to assemble guitars, do some fretwork, etc, without breaking the bank.

I love the videos too!
Sully really is a great guy who's very knowledgable and is always willing to help others.

I agree with his comments on the Mighty Mite stuff.
I actually think the quality is above the Squier stuff, especially their necks.
I've used their necks on several projects and I really, really like them.
This one has an ebony fretboard, medium jumbo frets, and a really comfortable "C" shape neck contour.
It feels alot like my Ernie Ball EVH, which is probably the most comfortable neck I've ever played.

I'd also keep an eye on eBay for parts and/or restoration projects too.

As for paint ...
I started off using rattlecans, Krylon specifically.
I learned all the techniques and cranked out some awesome looking paintjobs.
However, I found the Krylon really sufficated the tone on these guitars and in a few months, the paintjobs started cracking and really looked like crap.
So my advice to you if you do decide to go with rattlecans is to go the Reranch route and buy paint thats made for painting instruments, and not paint that's made for painting lawn furniture.

There's a learning curve and a greater expense associated with using compressor/spraygun setups, but if you intend on painting more than a few guitars, you may find it a wise investment. I know I did.

As for the Starpower kits ...
I like the fact that they offer a variety of options and that they're made right here in the U.S.A.
I spoke with a friend of mine who has used them and he has nothing but good things to say. He sent me a few pics of one that he built, so I thought I'd share them here. He bought the kit with the maple fretboard.

And here it is painted up ...

I'll let you guys know when I get my own kit.
Hopefully I'll be able to get ahold of someone this week and place my order.

Re: Set Neck Les Paul "Kit"

dino, thanks for the kind words, and for pix of that mahogany beauty! what a nice slab, for sure!

that kit looks pretty nice; i emailed them, but it bounced. for sure, keep us posted if you get one. is it me, or is the cutaway scooped out a bit more than a traditional lp? it seems a bit pointier to me.

Man, I've been trying everything to get ahold of these guys.
First I tried all of the email addresses (info@starpower, sales@starpower, etc..). Then I contacted their distributors and was given another email address (rick@starpower). Then I researched phone numbers and found them "no longer in service". Then, as a last resort, I clicked on one of his eBay items that he posted on the Starpower site and tried contacting through eBay.
It's not looking good.

And yeah ... I noticed the lower horn too.
I agree ... it looks too "pointy".

I'm thinking if I just move around alot on stage, nobody will notice.

eBay Store - SUZUKI VIOLIN ELECTRIC ANTIQUE ELECTRIC BASS: BLUEGRASS FIDDLE STRADIVARIOUS LAVAL, BLUEGRASS CAJUN MAPLE FLAME, accordion CONCERTINA

I noticed a set neck LP kit here, but the quality is suspect (basswood body, no real neck tenon, etc). The kits look like a good starting point for someone just getting into things, though.
