Ohhh Crap I did ______ to my Guitar !!!!
What was the worst thing you ever did to a guitar ???
I had an 80's Les Paul Standard and had my local guitar tech route it out and install a Floyd Rose tremolo in it !! Man did it make it sound like a piece of crap !! Sold it not long after that , Wish I had pic's but it was way back when ... Ohh I put all chrome parts on it too !! Looked cool , Sounded like dogmeat ! |

Re: Ohhh Crap I did ______ to my Guitar !!!!
Speaking of crap............I was travelling with some guys way back when in the good ole days........When one guy took a crap on this guys lester right on the body closed the case and it set there for a while whoooooooooa. When he found it lets just say shit hit the fan
So he in turn a few days later took a piss down the input jack of the other guys strat put some tape on it but hell it leaked everywhere damn the stink. Needless to say there were some fists thrown later........We didnt last long I wonder why (Damn I dont miss the good ole days) But the 70s were fun though at least. Wonder if anyone owns those guitars now?

Re: Ohhh Crap I did ______ to my Guitar !!!!
I did a few scalloped fingerboards (no Gibsons, thankfully), some locking trems, and so on. I've more than made up for my transgressions by restoring many guitars that others have boogered up! Worst one was a '54 LP Goldtop that some idiot replaced the fingerboard with a maple board that had the wrong scale, awful refin, ABR conversion with some funky trapeze tailpiece, wood putty in strategic locations, etc...What a mess!

Re: Ohhh Crap I did ______ to my Guitar !!!!
I wanted the rosewood fretboard of my '65 Danelectro to look like those shiny Fender maple necks so I took a spray can of Shellac and sprayed the neck with it.

Re: Ohhh Crap I did ______ to my Guitar !!!!
Ummm...well....I feel kinda stupid sayin this but
I had a 1979 Les Paul Custom Silverburst. I decided to sandpaper the frets one day, and I went too far down on the edge of the fret and it left a slight groove in the ebony fingerboard. It didn't bother the playing or sound, and it was barely noticeable, but I felt lousy about having done it. Fortunately, when I sold it, no one noticed. Second Stupid thing: I sold a Gibson 1968 SG Special for $150 back in 1972. |

I had a Nuno N4 - I paid $600 for it, and was dumb enough to put a strat pickguard on it. ( Oh well I was 19) Man that was stupid, as well was trading it in on a POS flying V-90 that never stayed in tune.

Re: Ohhh Crap I did ______ to my Guitar !!!!
It wasn't a Gibson however, back in the 80's I had my '62 RI Stratocaster Kahler'd and routed for humbucker in the lead slot.

Re: Ohhh Crap I did ______ to my Guitar !!!!
Thanks, Don! It is...was...indeed painful to think about it. But...I was disgusted with the music business and was "quitting for good"....Ummm....well....I thought so at the time, but we KNOW how that goes!

Re: Ohhh Crap I did ______ to my Guitar !!!!
I once accidentally set a 1954 goldtop on fire! Luckily it survived. Actually, thinking about it, I've done a load of dumb stuff when vintage guitars weren't that important as collectors pieces. I believe the guys doing conversions now will feel the same way in the future. (There's a guy on the other forum who has just converted and routed for humbuckers, an original 1952 lefty Les Paul. I'm sure it seems like a good idea ...) Remember, once it wasn't so bad to convert a PAF goldtop to a flametop or a plaintop to a flametop, and many thought that 1968 goldtops were only any use as conversion material.

OK, I gotta, know, how in God's green earth did you accidently set a guitar on fire? Gene Simmons moment gone wrong?
Oh, and I routed my Strat with a screwdriver once. Got really frustrated trying to stuff the pickup wires in just right, out came the Stanley!! And I hogged out my '77 Deluxe for a full size humbucker in the bridge , don't hate me!!

It was many years ago when I was working in a shop and learning repairs. A goldtop with the lower than normal neck angle and the wrong tailpiece came in and it was decided to reset the neck. (yes I know) I had just read the book Complete Guitar Repair by Hideo Kamimoto in which he suggests warming the fingerboard with a flame to remove it cleanly. With the first lick of the flames, all the fingerboard inlays had burst into fire and nothing would put it out. To cut a long story short, it was put right with original inlays and everything worked out ok. |
