SG Custom BYOG Build
So many of you might have seen silverkw's thread about his BYOG '59 build. I ordered my SG Kit shortly after he ordered his.
First things first, the cost of this kit isnt bad for what you receive at all. I of course ordered some VERY custom items compared to the standard custom shop SG kit they offer. Now this is from the custom shop area of the site, a bit more pricey but not overseas junk like some other kits. These are CNC milled kits made in New Hampshire. I'm pretty happy with what I got. It's exactly what I ordered and the quality seems pretty on par with what I've seen from Gibson recently. Now this build will be an SG custom and I'll be doing a Gibson overlay and custom paint job on it. This guitar is for me and my personal use so please withhold any negative comments regarding this being fake, counterfeit etc as Ive made no attempt to disguise what it is. Ok on to pics: Kit arrived very well packaged in my opinion. The body and neck were wrapped in bubble wrap with styrofoam supports on either side of the headstock. ![]() ![]() Here she is next to one of my standards. The body is a little bigger at the "hips" than the standard is, I'm wondering having never owned a custom if that's the case or if that's just how BYOG cuts their bodies. Either way I'll be making some edits to that so it's standardized. ![]() ![]() The headstock was measured and cut using the vintage crox overlay I purchased and is sized to late 60's early 70's Custom LP/SG size: ![]() ![]() Vintage correct neck angle: ![]() Ordered with white neck binding. A shitty pic (testing out my new ipad2 camera it's not that great:/): ![]() 61 RI neck joint: ![]() This was a pleasant surprise ![]() Modern small style control cavity (which I asked for) & Pickup Routes: ![]() ![]() ![]() I was pretty impressed with the inlays and fret work. I was worried about the nibs being correctly under the binding like I asked for but they are fine. The neck feels good and wide like I requested: ![]() That's it for now. More to come soon!

Re: SG Custom BYOG Build
I've always wanted to build my own LP but never thought of doing it this way.
Anyone now if there are fairly simple routes to this end from the U.K. If I were to do it, the point for me would be to target a figured cherry flame/quilt top. Where would I start hunting that down? |

Re: SG Custom BYOG Build
I know BYOG can do them although I think I've heard of issues with the '59 from silverkw. Precision guitars I think can do one and there is another company that does kits called Bartlett that ae very high end. They dont do SG's and are quite pricey and honestly when it's all done you could have probably bought a nice used LP for the same amount or less.
Best of luck though. Google those companies. Ta! |

Re: SG Custom BYOG Build
Yeah, BYOG has a range of kit for all prices. They have the custom shop section which looks to me like higher end kits. I'm about to pull the trigger on a custom shop LP kit from them. We'll see how it turns out.

As long as you store them in cases overnight, you should be fine. Either that or buy a 335. The Dons have this way of keeping the packs bloodlust at bay. |

Re: SG Custom BYOG Build
Looks great!
Man i'd be so tempted to order the same thing myself but with a 3rd pup routed and finish it as a 3pup white custom I'm a complete sucker for white SGs. |

Re: SG Custom BYOG Build
Ok so some progress was made over the weekend and yesterday so here is where she's at.
Got the overlay on and glued. Had to make a custom jib to hold it in place. The overlay fit almost too perfect so hats off to BYOG for that one. ![]() ![]() Grain filler is on in droves then some sanding sealer, now using some black fill lacquer that makes ebony finishes really have that nice deep black gloss once it's all done. It's been painted on hence the strokes. Pics were taken on a break about half way through the application. ![]() ![]() There was a slight ridge at the back of the neck joint that was sanded to a slope in the vintage style. I'm really chomping to get her done cause I want to hear it strung up so bad. ![]() Using a heated file to do a custom type serial. A friend of mine always thought it would be cool to do a dark ebony SG custom in the style of the old comic book "Phantom", which will be more evident when its complete. Hence the "P" along with her birth date, which I decided was the day the engraving was done. ![]() Back of the headstock and neck. You might notice something there, yup it's going to be a stinger. More to come soon. ![]()

Re: SG Custom BYOG Build
Ok so more progress happened end of last week and over this weekend.
I'm really getting close to finishing her up now. 18 coats of black paint/lacquer combo on body and neck then wet-sanded every 3 coats. The "wetness" in the first image is water from removing material: Back: ![]() Neck: ![]() After the black was completed to a satisfactory coverage it was time for the piece which I think will make this guy stand out - The Stinger: ![]() ![]() Started the clear yesterday. This week is going to be the arduous spray/dry/wet-sand routine for about 17-20 coats. I want this baby to look like a steinway when she's done. As usual more to come soon!
