Hex screws, LP Junior bridge

Hello-

regarding adjusting an LP Junior bridge forward & back with the hex screws..

On an old copy I had some hex screws become stripped when I did not loosen the strings enough before adjusting the bridge backward...

I have a new bridge now and would like to avoid this problem! (of my own making)

Seems obvious now that I should loosen the strings before doing this, but

*is there a trick to doing it without unravelling the winds of the strings on the tuners?*

Possibly something similar to the way we capo at the first fret when loosening strings and adjusting a bolt-on neck?
Thanks
