Re: Building BYOGuitar's Custom Shop 59 Kit.
I started with the custom shop SG kit they had there and then started upgrading from there. Essentially ive had them make me an SG custom, spec'd out as close as close can get, large headstock, 61 neck joint etc. I'm very excited to get it and begin the process.

Re: Building BYOGuitar's Custom Shop 59 Kit.
Have you got your replacement board yet? I'm starting to get very concerned as I've heard no word about my kit in some time. Let me know if you got yours.

They said my board has been sent out last week. Hopefully I will get it later this week, I hope this one would turn out better than the last

No, from the time it was sent out it took about a week.
Actually, my buddy (at the US border) told me the board arrived, I am going to pick it up this afternoon!

Re: Building BYOGuitar's Custom Shop 59 Kit.
I ordered mine in late January and I guess it will be here tomorrow. Does a month and change seem acceptable for an order like this? Or am I just too used to Ebay?

Re: Building BYOGuitar's Custom Shop 59 Kit.
Alright... some updates...
I decided to do a wrap tail configuration, like a refinished 56. The top join is off center by 1.5mm, which would play out nicely with the 56 wrap tail look. - I got replacement board from BYO guitar a while ago. - Glued on the neck to the body using hide glue (HUGE learning curve). - Glued on the fretboard to the neck and body using hide glue (felt much more comfortable). - Did a dry fit of important parts. - Mounted pickup rings, made a couple of small mistakes, had to fill and re-drill a few pickup mounting ring screw holes. - Used a tail mount and ABR-1 bridge to locate the wrap-tail position. - Bought a used 8" drill press (best $20 I have ever spent!!!) - Drilled the holes for the wrap-tail studs. I had to spend another $10 for the 7/16 drill bit, kind of a weird size, but the studs fit nice and true. - Drilled the grounding wire hole from bridge PU cavity to the treble side stud, this is way more logical than drilling from control cavity. - Mounted the wrap tail and adjusted intonation slightly. The string spacing is very nice. - And it plays and sounds lovely! Needs maybe very slight fret leveling, but the guitar just sings! Of course it has no finish yet. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I can't say it's as great and as historically correct as say, a Bartlett kit, but then again, you have to consider the price.

Re: Building BYOGuitar's Custom Shop 59 Kit.
Some more progress.
I HATE GRAIN FILLING... It sucks but it's a must... I am glad it's over... I used a darker filler since I am going for a dark back (not as BLACK as Gibson CS' dark back though). ![]() ![]() ![]()

Tell me about it!
Grain filling is a PITA, but once it's done, the rest is a piece of cake.

Re: Building BYOGuitar's Custom Shop 59 Kit.
Timbermate from Stewmac. Followed the instruction on their website as well. Relatively painless, but still quite painful comparing to any other part of the whole finishing process.

Re: Building BYOGuitar's Custom Shop 59 Kit.
That really is looking good.
Nice work ! I like the way you set up the bridge / stoptail. By the way - where did you get the stoptail from with the adjusting screws ? Wayne |

Re: Building BYOGuitar's Custom Shop 59 Kit.
Well yeah, for nitro coats I just shoot a coat then go play some guitar for 30 minutes then come back, can build up pretty quickly on a Saturday when I don't have to go shopping with the wife.
![]() ![]() That's basically just a regular Gibson wrap tail. Mine is TonePros with locking studs. You can get regular ones from Gibson, Pigtails, Faber (with locking studs), etc.

Re: Building BYOGuitar's Custom Shop 59 Kit.
I spent 10 Euro for this used drill press: Yours looks better though
![]() Congrats on your project so far. I'll be glad once I drilled the stud holes at the right position, also.

A few more.
Made a small mistake when spraying the back, but it's corrected. I have the base coat on the front as well. ![]() ![]() ![]()
