My 1984 Studio with the factory Kahler. Added the Faber Loc studs and the sustain is awesome.

Re: les pauls with tremolo's, floyd roses and weird crap

Bought this new Epiphone Les Paul Studio "Midnight Vine" today I think its Limited Edition not sure though. But it came with a Floyd Rose and it plays mighty fine.

Thanks it was a pretty sweet deal as well. cheaper than it should have been I'm guessing. But I'm not one to complain with a little extra cash in my pocket.

Re: les pauls with tremolo's, floyd roses and weird crap

I'm a big fan of the LPs with Floyds...play them as often as possible!

There's just something about a hot rodded LP with a Floyd/Kahler that reassures me rock 'n roll ain't dead yet...

Hey there,

Thank you very much for the welcome! And yes, the guitar on the left is a Neal Schon LP...it absolutely oozes mojo from every fret...

Very sweet Custom indeed! I've heard the Kahlers are ultra smooth...is it like a recessed Floyd, where you can both dive bomb and skyrocket the pitch?

According to the folks at Floyd Rose, OFRs used by large manufacturers (like Gibson) are made on one of two lines in Korea. Schaller only makes the bubble-pack versions for the aftermarket and a few OFRs for the smaller boutique builders.

If I ever get another Les Paul (or maybe another guitar, period), it'll have be a LP with a Floyd.

Preferably a custom.

I have the LP Axcess and it has sustain like no other...
Of all my other 16 guitars including my Steinberger GM2T, the Axcess
is by far the best guitar i've ever played.

Re: les pauls with tremolo's, floyd roses and weird crap

Someone asked earlier in this post about how the Les Trem equipped guitars fit in a HSC, while my guitar is not a EPi or Gibson, its still a Les Paul shaped Turser and no it does not fit in either of my SKB Les Paul cases with the les trem on it. While my playing is most likely nothing compared to most or all who posted in this thread I do like the Les Trem, I picked it up when the original owner of the company that makes Les Trem's passed away to use on a different guitar(the epi BBLP) and wanted to try it on something cheap first.. Stew mac still sells them but the price is about $50 higher now, around 170 I think. Here's a pic...

I just bought one also. It is a fabulous guitar. One the best Gibson has done in a long time.

The Epi I posted earlier in this thread is now on Ebay but it isn't far off tonewise from the Axcess at all.

I've got Kahlers on several guitars. You can both dive and pull the pitch as on a Floyd. The good news with a Kahler is that the action doesn't change height when you do this (as it does with a Floyd). The bad news is that some folks with floppy tunings who get *really* agro with the dive bombing will occasionally have a string jump a saddle. Very rare (I've never had it happen) and, far as I know, the only remotely critical thing I've heard about a Kahler.

The rest of the good news is that bends are easier with a Kahler -- on a Floyd the rear will raise (this increases the distance you have to go horizontally to do a full-stop bend) and the rest of the strings will go out of tune. Not so on a Kahler. And with a Kahler, there's no giant swimming pool rout out of the back of the guitar for springs. The Kahler needs about a 3/4" deep rout on the front of the guitar and that's it.

They are kinda short. The bridge ring is 1/4" high at it's highest point. A 3/8" ring would work but no more. A historic ring (1/2") will not fit.

Here's a side view.

Isn't half the reason for playing a Les Paul so that you can bend with your fingers?

+1, and I will add that another HUGE plus to the Kahler is they are so smooth, you can do very nice subtle "Put a Spell On You" Bigsby-like vibratos that never sound right with a Floyd. AND you can actually rest your hand on it without it going out of tune on you.

The Floyd has a bigger range in pitch variation, but Idon't like them.

If you say so. But what does that have to do with dives and dips? Or, for that matter, with pullups that go beyond what you have space for on a fretboard?

Re: les pauls with tremolo's, floyd roses and weird crap

I just don't care for the Khaler type tremolos and I actually feel shame that I mounted one on a '76 Std (back around '85) because I felt it ruined the guitar. No negative preconceptions on the tremolo, I just didn't like it. My second mistake was getting rid of the guitar instead of just playing it with the original bridge and tailpiece and living with the holes I'd made.

That said I've owned a couple of Floyd Rose equipped guitars and have liked them (the lone exception being I have a Khaler made Floyd on a Peavey that is less than inspiring, but that could be due to the Tremsetter), so I'd like to try a Floyd on a Les Paul.
