Re: which bone nut???
I hear a little sarcism in one post?....if you are using ivory please get it from an enviromentally good source...there are salers out there who buy old ivory (pre-ban) and then shape it......however, I decided to go with what is called TUSQ from Graph Tech...I am happy and it sound excellent http://www.graphtech.com/products.html?CategoryID=1

Re: which bone nut???
white tail may work.. just have to find a piece of solid bone thick enough.
I have a blank thats cow bone that i have shaped ready to go in my Epi, but I refuse to pay 100+ bucks to get some files to make the string slots.. Friggan rip off.

Re: which bone nut???
Nut files are a real pain to pay for but if you're making several to many nuts they are mandatory. You can make a nut using just "hobby" files from say Home Depot or Radio Shack in conjunction with some modified feeler gauges for the smaller strings but the results might be suspect. Nut files are marketed to professional guitar repair people. Not to say that a lay person can't make a nut but the cost of proper tools is prohibitive to a hobbyist (depending on your hobby and or bank account). Not to mention that nut making also typically involves a belt sander and possibly a band saw thus increasing cost. I am a slightly aggressive hobbyist and friend helper and own a belt sander, band saw and nut files. I've made nuts out of pre-prepped bone blanks, raw bone from Petco etc., Nylabone, and ebony and they all work just fine. Bone to me = cow bone but i'm sure other types of bones have there merits as well. I think that a well made nut is more important than what it is made of (this becomes obvious after you make your first bad nut). -Matt |

would be pretty cheap and awesome!! also a bone nut made of somekind of bone from your own body would be the most "mojo" thing to do.... you will be one with the guitar... literally |

![]() A Jimi Hendrix, SRV, or Randy Rhoades ankle bone would be the ultimate though.
