I just chop the old tips off with wire cutters. Heat the shaft with a soldering iron and press the new ones on. Easy.

You dont have to use any glue ? Just heat the the tip and insert into the tuner body ?

Uh, yeah. I would have mentioned glue if I used it, fella.

I do it pretty much like Greg and yes I have them on mine.
Uncle Lou does have 3 Grades.

I cut the tip of a soldering Gun off and sandwich the shaft between the 2
metal ends. That completes the circuit and heats the shaft up in a few
seconds. Some people just use a lighter. Be sure that each button
is set to the same depth .

Mike .. If you look in BOTB there are alot of 60 Burst's with single line Klusons .. As a matter of fact very few 60 burst's had the reflector knobs !!

Here's a 60 with shrunken Kluson single rings ...

...well,I'm not about to gut 47 year old double rings for repro tips...lou double rings would look decent on a set of modern Kluson single lines though...

Well Lou's out of the biz now !! He sold his whole stock of tuner tips to Hoboken Vinatge Guitar here in NJ ! But I hear companies like Vintage Clone and others are working on lots of different plastic bits like the inlays and such , Maybe they'll make realistic buttons , Most people want the single ring though !!

They are close but not dead on. The molding is a little more crude than the originals. The plastic isn't as hard, either. I think the swirl is a little overkill compared to the mint original set I have. But they do look close enough for me.
A lot better than crumbly, shrunken, brown buttons!

The Allparts ones I ordered look pretty funky and green. Stay away from those.

Re: Uncle Lou's repro 50's Kluson tuner tips ...

I sanded and buffed one set out, it was probably more work than it was worth. I tinted one set on a crusty set of Klusons I retipped, just to give them a aged look to match the tuners better. Usually I just leave them as is.
