Strange Idea
ok Flickoflash,
my first post on the new site and it's a strange one but I know you've had one of these so maybe someone has some insight or ideas. I have an 81 LP custom that I restored as a "Blacktop" it had a kahler trem in it and I filled the hole with a nice piece of maple, you can't tell but it's by no means a AAA flame or something. I haver a pretty good chunk of time in it but not a TON of money, I'm not against molesting it a little bit (since someone beat me to the punch) It plays like the shit, setup by Dan Erlewine himself, nearly perfect action and great sustain. anyhow, it weighs freakin 12+ lb! I'm thinking of routing a medium sized chamber in it to lighten it up a little bit, and to give it a little of that "Lucille" hollow-body tone. Where should I do the route to miss the most stuff? Will thihs ruin my sustain? How much will this actually lighten up this guitar? Any pics, ideas, talking me out of this stupidity, all welcome. thanks B |

well I don't want to disrupt the areas where my pots and switches and stuff are, and i don't mind a small removable panel on top of a big hole. I'm mostly thinking of routing the mahogany area where my right arm rests about 2" deep or so.

His was a modified 54 converted to a 3 pickup as we know it strangely this is a very limited 54 72 reissue ( rumored to be made from 50's left over bodies) which was also converted to Framptons specs which this route is also the same on his new signature model under that top

balance
Thats pretty extreme!
What about neck dive? With all that wood taken out does this guitar still balance? Does it still sound the same? I wonder what that one weighs now? - have to say I'd never forgive myself, but like you say yours is already a bit hacked perhaps you should work out a little bit!

like I said i don't have a ton of money in mine, probably just under a grand in parts etc, it's a player and a re-top and a chamber would probably push this idea way out of my price range. I think if i routed a "kidney bean" shaped area with a small flange to insert a panel into it would be virtually seamless. My main concern is what's this gonna do to everything else that's good about the guitar, tone, sustain, etc?

i just want to make a big ass cavity in there, on the side opposite the controls with a removable, or glued in panel. Maybe I could smuggle stuff in there. haha. still thinking about it.
