Please HELP with Grounding!!...

H!
I'm a complete beginner at building guitars and I need help with the ground wire(s). I know how to wire all the components and stuff in the guitar, do everything from choosing the right wood to routing it but I'm confused when it comes to grounding everything!

I'm building a guitar that's similar to a les paul (not in shape but when it comes to electronics) but it only has one master volume and one master tone, and it has a three way switch, 2 humbuckers e.t.c.

I've drawn up (a really rubbish) diagram of what i think is grounding my electronics, and please could you tell me the correct way to ground my guitar if it is wrong? thatnks a billion

please don't say stuff like how s*!t I am and stuff, I'm only a 14year old girl who's building a guitar....

Re: Please HELP with Grounding!!...

Thats absolutely fine. There will be ground to one of the lugs of the volume and one of the tone (bent and solder to the pot case), but you probably know that.

Re: Please HELP with Grounding!!...

wait -hold on. Eddie, when you say that there will be ground to one of the lugs of both the vol and tone, do you mean i neeed to do this as well as just have the wires soldered on top of the pots? because my diagram only shows that i would solder wires to the top of the pots, not to any lugs..?

Re: Please HELP with Grounding!!...

The wiring diagrams shold show you what I mean:
Wiring Library

The tone pot needs a path to ground to send the high freqencies to.
The Volume pot needs a path to ground to send the whole signal to as you turn the volume down.
This is typically done just by bending that lug up and soldering it to the pot case and then the pot case since your pot case is ground.

Nice post and link Eddie! Thanks! I had standard modern wiring as I find 50s to have a weird bright spike. Anyway, I use Modern wiring with a treble bleed across the two volume lugs.

I then swapped the pickup lead and toggle wire on the volume pots to get independent volumes which I love! However, I then lost functionality of the treble bleed. I had a suspicion I needed to move the the tone cap as well so your link to the diagrams confirms this. Thanks. Hopefully it won't effect the tone other than to enable the functionality of the treble bleed.

I was hoping you all could help with grounding as well though. I have most of my LPs with the stock LP modern wiring and grounding. It has that odd plate in the cavity that gets in the way! Only grounding I can see is the pot lugs and the bridge ground. My 1989 SG however has no plate and instead has the star grounding where there is a ground wire from all pots and jacks to one location. Is this better? Can I do this to my LPs or do I need to remove the plate from the cavity? Will it be quieter? I was going to just run a ground wire around to all the pots, but I thought I need to run to the jack and toggle? CONFUSED?! Thanks for help.
