Re: New Mod ... This Guitar Smokes!

Thanks Tenacious T and AndrooSlash.

I certainly could have done it the "right way" (if you consider what Ace did "the right way") but that would involve routing out a whole lotta wood and I'm sure that would have had a disasterous effect on my tone not to mention that is a permenant mod that can never be reversed.

The beauty of my mod is that I can always take out the smoke mod and return my shitty glam guitar back to it's original condition any time I want.

And for those wondering ... these smoke cartridges don't just ignite and go out. I've got two sizes and I used the smaller one for the pics which smokes (and I mean smokes!) for a good 30 seconds or so. The larger ones probably go for up to a minute.

Anyone who routes their guitar up like Ace just to pull off a silly stunt like this clearly has little understanding of tone and just wanted to look "cool" without thinking of the consequences.
I'm pretty sure if Ace had this option 30 years ago, he wouldn't have ruined his guitar like he did.

If I was going to do it, I would do it the way you did! No way am I routing any of my guitars for that shit! Some folks want it to be as authentic as possible though. Whatever works for them!

If you consider activating the smoke with the rhythm tone knob "the real way" then I have done it "the real way".

For added effect, I installed a bright amber LED that's hooked to the same switch, but is on a separate circuit that goes to (2) AA's.

I modified a power terminal that's used on model trains to connect the fuse for the smoke cartridge.

I also fabricated a dummy pickup from pieces I found in my parts box.

I took the bobbins off a cheap pickup, removed the magnet and pole pieces, and mounted it to a shallow Seymour Duncan bracket for better clearance. Then I bored out the holes and trimmed the edges of the bracket to help allow more smoke to pass.
It works great!
Smoke just pours out.

Getting back on topic. (Sorry for hijacking) You should think of selling those in a kit. I'm sure you'd make a nice chunk of change..

Yo can you explain how u did it and going through the steps using pictures??? Like putting the smoke in and how it uses the knobs??? (Sorry for asking a lot, just that I am so interested in it!)

There's a 3-position rotary switch in the "Rhythm Tone" position.
It activates both the LED and ignites the smoke cartridge.
The LED runs off of (2) AA's and the ignitor runs off a 9v battery on a separate circuit.

The downside is that I no longer have a Rhythm pickup that's functional.
The upside is that I still have an extra space (where the Rhythm Volume control was) to add something else. I was thinking maybe a separate control for a Roman Candle on the headstock or maybe a db boost, or even effects ... maybe a phaser, I dunno.
I'll think of something.

But how do you connect the rythm pickup to the place where the rythem pickup is without routing the back??

Re: New Mod ... This Guitar Smokes!

Or you could do what Ace did starting on the ALIVE! tour.. Just put a smoke bomb in the control cavity with the fuse sticking out. Light it with a cigg lighter, and the smoke will have to come out of the pup cavities!

Actually, don't do that, or your pots, caps, and everything will be ruined!

Re: New Mod ... This Guitar Smokes!

You nailed the smoker Dino. I don't think you could do that any better. The pick up with the light coming thru the holes...smoke billowing out....awesome bro.

You do incredible work. Everything I've seen is absolutely stunning. I just caught a pic or your Camo EVH project...Superb bro. Just superb!

I'd love to have you build a guitar for me one day.

Re: New Mod ... This Guitar Smokes!

hey dino, it's sully from the jcf. great job, man!

years ago, i was in a kiss tribute band, and i had a $99 epi lp that i used as a guinea pig for the smoker project. i had it wired to the pickup selector, and when it worked like it was supposed to, it was great. sadly, most shows that i played, i had to have my tech light me up with a lighter (i put the original wicks back in the cartridges after the electric matches went in). of all the shows we did, i don't have any video where it worked like it should, but here's a vid of shock me at a gig in memphis about seven years ago or so.

shock me

i had some serious feedback issues that night, but if you look, you can see my tech light me up off of the side of the stage. then it's purple smoke for a bit.

i eventually retired "smokey" and switched to an epi standard. those smoke cartridges (at least the ones i had) made a mess on the finish, but since it was poly, it cleaned up okay.

dino does awesome work, and i've enjoyed seeing pix of his projects over the years.

sully

Hey Sully! ... Thanks man.
Great video! ... wish I could have hooked you up back when you were doing those gigs. You would really love these new smoke cartridges. No fuse to light, just a 9v battery and and throw switch. And the smoke lasts alot longer too!

Awesome Crazy Train video too btw.
Love that RR Ltd.!
Hope you still got it. (?)

at that time, i didn't really know anyone who knew how to make it work, so i went into radio shack and said "here's what i wanna do, let's make it happen!" thankfully, the guy working there was a big kiss fan.

two of the mishaps were pretty funny, though; the first time i tried it, i went to switch guitar
