It doesn't get all that hot and clean up is pretty painless.
The paint has all the characteristics of nitro ... it's starting to yellow and sink into the wood a bit and there are beginning signs of stress cracks.
But yeah, you're right ... I would think the smoke would discolor it, but so far so good.
Maybe it's poly after all

Thanks! She's an '81 Custom. I bought it this way. The middle pup is not original, and I installed chrome hardware. Bursts like this were common of the Norlin period.. You just gotta look for them!

Wow, I cannot believe Ace smoked his guitar in '77-'78 with the same burst as you.

Yeah. Sickening isn't it? I like this much better than the actual Ace signature models... It's kind of cool to have my own version!

So far the only way I know and have heard to get the black one is to get this:

Gibson Custom 1957 Les Paul Custom 3 Pickup VOS Electric Guitar and more Solid Body Electric Guitars at GuitarCenter.com.

or the epiphone version.

And totally renovate it

Or you could get a '68 reissue and install a middle pickup..

haha how do you install a fake one any way?

and im not dissing the original poster with his smoking guitar, but has anyone actually ever made their own smoking guitar by doing it the real way, the ace does? Because I know that Ace routs out the back of his guitar and does everything, but has anyone ever done it like that??

Paul Helms, who used to be in KISSARMY, had his done the real way. Someone overloaded it once and it blew up on him! It's the same guitar he uses now with the KISS logo on the top. He tells me he's getting it restored back to original. Check out his Ace lessons on youtube.

As for a black Ace model, I'm thinking about doing it with this...

Yeah, it's mine. It's a '77 that came with factory chrome hardware. It needs frets and electronics, so I stripped it, and I'm still trying to decide what I wanna do with it!

Paul Helms used to sell his Ace outfits through Bill Baker's website. Not sure if he still is. He told me that he's gonna stop making them. I had a chance to buy his Hotter Than Hell outfit, and I passed like an idiot...

I'm still begging him to sell it me. He'll give in one of these days. Or make me a new one!

Hahaha yeah, I know they sell the Love Gun outfit on his site but I don't know if it is Paul Helms. Does Paul have any pictures of his smoking guitar, inside and out?

Wow that looks like it took a hit, I wonder if there is a vid anywhere of it blowing up..

That looks like it def took a lot to deal with a lot of pain after that explosion..

I have been looking for someone to modify my guitar into a smoker but I haven't found someone to actually modify it like Ace did his..

When I talk to Paul I'll ask him who did his. It might have been Bill Baker.

I have always wondered how and where to get my guitar modified because I have been wanting to get it done, but like I want it done like the real way by controlling it with the rythm tone knob and everything!
