Nash reworked Les Paul

I know relicing is not for everyone but I am a big fan and can not say enough about my Nash relic'd Les Paul.

The clean tones are amazing. I play in middle position (both pkus on but with the neck pku coil split).

Here are a few pics for those interested

Re: Nash reworked Les Paul

I don't mind relic'd guitars if it's moderately light and looks believable. You know, if the 'aging' and 'battle scars' are in spots that make sense. For example, around the knobs, where the arm rests, around the toggle switch, maybe on the bottom; especially if the nicks, pings, and dents look like they could have happened from a bracelet, wallet chain, coffee table, belt buckle, or something else believable.

Unfortunately, your guitar looks like someone just took the nail removing end of a hammer and started lightly skimming the guitar in random spots with it for the sheer intent of making it look beat up. If the finish and details weren't so well preserved and in such good condition, it might be believable, but right now it's not much different than those t-shirts people buy with the little reinforced pre-made holes in the collar and pre-faded silkscreen.

But that's just me. If you like it, that's awesome.

Yeah, Nash does great work with a LP...that's why they are almost impossible to find--they get grabbed up as soon as they hit the market.

I have a buddy that owns one, and he loves it.

Maybe it's just me.......but wouldn't it have been politer not to respond if you feel that strongly?

The "Relic" subjects are sure becoming more emotive than the "Religious" ones!

I've become cool with it. To each his own. Having taken an enforced sabatical from guitars/music etc, etc for twenty odd years I walked into an entire new world and I guess I needed to adjust. I've seen some stunning work, not just stunning actually, but mind blowing. There's some shit I don't like, ****ed around epi's etc, etc... but who the **** am I to say what can or can't be done to a fellow players guitar? And why should a stunning 59 relic be more acceptable or accountable than a scratchy Epi slaughtered in a school lab in Des Moines? Every player/luthier/shoe shine boy had to start somewhere.......

Ah but shoe-shining is much more profitable and less degrading than playing guitar for a living!

I'm with you. I think I spent about 15 years between guitar purchases (and have more than made up for it in the past year), and there are things going on that I never would have even considered. I would never consider relic'ing a guitar any other way that the old fashioned one - by playing the sh!t out of it. However, I still prefer a land line to a cell phone, too, so I guess I'm officially an old fart. That said, I would never begrudge anyone on their tastes - we all have a right to our own. And besides, underneath any perceived falsehoods lies a thing of beauty - a Les Paul. Nice guitar...

Re: Nash reworked Les Paul

all good points...I can totally understand how some are not into relics and that is cool. I especially dig the feel with the finish removed from the back of the neck.

Still loving this one and she has seen some serious play time since she landed. Love the wiring Nash does with these...cool for those who like clean tones. Having the toggle in middle position with neck pku coil tapped and bridge left full humbucker is totally bad ass.

Real working guitar players are going to beat them up anyways, I buy them as tools not art, if it gets destroyed I don't care and with relic'd guitars I treat them even worse, the more beat a guitar gets the cooler it feels. I've gone through over 100 Les Pauls in the last 34 years.

OP- that's a great looking guitar, looks great I thought it was a Reissue and almost didn't notice the Nashville bridge at first.

Re: Nash reworked Les Paul

I really kinda like it. The more I look around and stuff at other peoples' guitars, the more I think that the burst finishes look better a bit worn in. Not sure exactly how worn-in I would want mine to be, but there's something about a brand new shiny burst finish that just seems . . . odd.

I should also mention that I have several other non-relic Les Pauls but the relic sees most of the playing out

and my first Gibson ever...bought new back in 1984

Re: Nash reworked Les Paul

yongling- you missed the point entirely........... I have some that I keep and take decent care of, but my working guitars are just tools meant to be used and then replaced when damaged or worn beyond repair........... traveling with guitars takes a toll on them.

I've only broken 3-4 out of that 100, but worn several completely out.

Relics take the "fear" out of harming a new guitar for some, I love beat up old guitars.

Isn't this kind of silly? Someone is afraid of beating up their guitar by accident, so they pay some one to beat it up 1st on purpose? A preemptive self-fullfilling prophecy I guess!

I can understand doing it 'cause they like the look (just a little, 'cause I really don't at all) but not for that reason! Hmmm...

I like the look of this relic whether it looks naturally aged or not.

However... I don't think I would ever have this done intentionally.

Sometimes it's more than heartbreaking, sometimes it pisses me off. But rather than pay someone to put that first ding in for you I'd rather buy used and, basically, have someone else pay for the pleasure of putting that first ding in for me.

I see. That makes much more sense to me. Haha. Well I hope my post before didn't insult you in anyway because apparently a mod thinks that I'm insulting you. I re-read my message and realized that if you read it in an angry tone it can sound sorta provocative. MAYBE he's just an angry person. Well if you took it personally then I would like t apologize and like you to know that it wasn't meant to be interpreted as in an insulting way. Peace out

Yet when you actually look at an old guitar, at least IME, thats generally not how they are. They are just old and show a lifetime of wear. Relics often dont reflect this, they often have show wear as you describe it, carefully placed designer playing wear. Old guitars are often not very attarctive or cool at all.

This 1965 EB bass is just old and battered.
