Re: Mastodon and Dethklok tonight!
Jeez - you lucky bastard!!
Can't remember the last time I saw such a good lineup at one gig. All they're missing is Baroness and Opeth! |

Re: Mastodon and Dethklok tonight!
When's the Dethklok guy gonna get back to work and deliver a new season of 'Metalocalypse?'
I want to find out what happened after last season's finale, dammit. - D

Re: Mastodon and Dethklok tonight!
Doomtastic!
It was a weird show though. I was looking forward to seeing High on Fire so I figured we should get there early. We arrive at 8:15 and as I'm getting my ticket scanned I hear Mastodon's Divinations starting. I look at my girl and we're both like WTF?! We get inside and Mast has already started; we only missed one song but it was damn early. I went under the delusion Mastodon would be bringing the crowd but I was far from correct. Maybe 10% of the crowd was into at the start, everyone else was standing around with blank stares on their face. No one was moving, no pit, no pogos, nothing other than a few horns in the air. Mast ripped through Crack the Skye and took a quick break with a keyboard outro. You could tell they were a bit flustered but they came back hard with Circle of Cysquatch which pulled in a bit more of the crowd. And this is a tip to their showmanship; they converged quickly at the drums and apparently changed the set list up to their older more thrashy stuff. This pulled the crowd in and it was def easier for them to play so their stage presence got a boost also. They rocked. I really thought it was going to be a disappointing show once I saw the crowd but Mast pulled them in and closed it with a bang. I was surprised the most when Dethklok came out. I really thought they were going to have a tough crowd. As soon as the lights went down the crowd roared and packed the main floor!? I was surprised to see how much everyone was into it. There was a small pit that would break out, crowd surfers and plenty of movement. Dethklok pummeled the crowd. I had planned to stay for a couple songs to see what they are like but ended up staying for the whole show. They were tight musically with great tones and the volume was spot on. For the most part they were running animated videos of the songs on a huge LED screen behind the band but the lights would come up for solos. It was a great show. I hate that I missed High on Fire and Converge but I'm glad I didn't miss anymore of Mastodon. I'll post some pics once I load them off my camera. If you get a chance to see this tour do it but show up early. |

Re: Mastodon and Dethklok tonight!
Thanks for that rybass.
Pity you missed Converge and High on Fire - unusual for bands to be early and not late! Surprised that most of the crowd weren't getting into Mastodon - perhaps as you suggested they weren't into the more progressive Crack the Skye sound and needed the more hardcore, older stuff from Remission and Leviathan to get them moving. Look forward to seeing the pics! |

Re: Mastodon and Dethklok tonight!
It had slipped my mind but Charlotte has a "rave law" where all major shows, especially music, must conclude at 11 on weekdays. That explains the early show.
Charlotte is also notorious for sh!tty crowds at shows. Most shows I've seen here consist of people standing around with blank stares. I've been to many shows where there was no encore because when the band quits playing the crowd leaves. I saw it first hand at Aerosmith about 10 years ago. It's dissappointing and one of the reasons some amaxing shows pass us by. Either way it was a good show and here are some pics. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And a good shot of the crowd for Dethklok.
