The White Album - a gift

My son just got back from NYC and instead of some "I heart NY" shirt he bought me a copy of the 2009 remastered White Album and said "I thought you would appreciate this more". What an Awesome kid.

There are no more epic (not the label) albums any more. Music that has layers upon layers. I guess I'm getting old

I always like the older versions of albums, much more raw-er.

Re: The White Album - a gift

Update: This is so cool, my other son who is 16 and a player has been listening to the White Album on his Ipod solid since yesterday and can't stop talking about it. He says its the most incredible thing he's ever heard. Blown away by it. 40 years after its release, that's quite amazing.

Re: The White Album - a gift

There is a lot of good new music out there, but not easy to find amongst the over hyped crap. More and more young'uns are turning to classic rock. Isn't it strange how our parents hated our music, and now our kids LOVE our music?

But so were our parents. Big Band music was awesome. It just was too huge a leap to get from Glenn Miller to the White Album (Helter Skelter!) for them.

Well, whatever somebody likes is fine with me. My parents were older and from the big band era so I grew up with Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman etc... But I do think there was a quantum leap in the music that occurred in the 60's that forced a certain measure of honesty to be injected that was not present before in the "leave it to beaver" era.

I had to dig this up from an old post of mine (from Rolling Stone):

Quote:
According to the Pew Research Center, a shared love of the group has helped bridge the generation gap in America, significantly reducing disagreements between teenagers and their parents. Every age group surveyed from 16 to 64 listens to rock and roll more than any other format - and The Beatles rank in the top four among every age group.
That fact still amazes me.

Re: The White Album - a gift

This morning my 16 year old is in the kitchen with his acoustic pulling of a flawless rendition of blackbird explaining to me why the chord changes are so creative and cool. He took his guitar to school to show this "new music" to his friends.

Life is good.

Re: The White Album - a gift

My 15 year old isn't a player but he's got the old man's taste. Queen and the Beatles are his favs right now, also a big Hendrix fan. The Beatles remasters are awesome.

I think we have to attribute some of the resurgence of "classic rock" to Guitar Hero and Rock Band, there are some great cuts on those games. Last night I was practicing, screwing around with intro to Maidens Number Of The Beast and he came in and asked me to play the song with him on Guitar Hero.

im 15 and i dont listen to very much new music (post 70's) All i listen to is The Beatles, The Who, The Clash, The Kinks, Buzzcocks.

Kids listening to Beatles and Zep and The Who are becoming more and more common.

Just because that generation had all the great music and musicians of our time

Revolution #9 is a great piece of work. I NEVER skip it when listening to The White Album.....it has a rhythm of its own.
