Rick Rubin: How does he do it?

Rubin is one of my favorite producers as far as his discography goes. There's a lot of commercial releases he's done that are on my favorites list.

Rick Rubin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

He also manages to get bands "back to basics"....as was the case with Metallica. (Something Bob Rock couldn't do with "St Anger")...and he's revived the careers of a few recording artists..the last I heard he was currently working with ZZ Top on a new album...and with the same approach.

I've heard the rumors...he basically just...listens while he has a harem of engineers do the dirty work.

So what's your take on Rubin? Dig his stuff?

Yes he did. He's also worked a lot with the Red Hot Chili Peppers and other folks like Neal Diamond, System of a Down, Tom Petty, Danzig, and Slayer...

Re: Rick Rubin: How does he do it?

He's been called the ghost producer because he's so absent from actually producing...according to Kerry King anyway, who'd know him best after working with him for 20+ years...I think Metallica's bassist had the same complaints.

That being said, he and his under producers have done great stuff.

Re: Rick Rubin: How does he do it?

He's produced some pretty bad stuff over the years......Linkin Park!!??!!

I like the sound of "goin' back to Cali" by LL Cool J a lot though......
And he produced some great sounding Slayer and Danzig stuff.

Re: Rick Rubin: How does he do it?

I think he just convinces bands he works with to lose all the baggage they pick up before they work with him and get back to what works best for them.

I can't wait to hear the ZZ Top record.

Re: Rick Rubin: How does he do it?

It's hit or miss with Rick Rubin, but more hits than misses. I have seen Metallica behind the scenes of the making of the their latest album and it seems that he's barely involved and the engineers are doing most of the work and even producing as well. I'd like to have a producer like him, cuz he's barely there and I get to do whatever I want!

Rick Rubin: How does he do it?

I think he smokes a ton of dope. It the songs sound good when he's baked, they'll sound good normally.

Re: Rick Rubin: How does he do it?

i dont dig everything hes done-like the hip hop stuff but for his work with johnny cash alone he deserves every respect.
i think his concept didnt work too well with metallica, but at least he got them back to their roots.

im lookin forward to what he is gonna do with zz top- intersting and hairy combination.
i mean beardwise they are a perfect match.

i certainly liked the work he did with tom petty too- wildflowers is in my cd drive every now and then, a good Žun.

Re: Rick Rubin: How does he do it?

Anyone ever read The Black Crowes experience with Rubin? According to them, he was a complete bastard to work with and pushed hard to have them change their name to the Kook Kounty Krowes. That's right, "KKK" from Georgia. That would've gone over really well. That said, who knows what sort of primadonna tendencies the Robinson brothers might've already begun to exhibited at that time.

He's a bit of a genius, no doubt about that. Though for all-round genius without the gratuitous eccentrics, I look to John Leckie. Look up the man's creds. The man practically produced Brit pop.
