For me I have to say the Grateful Dead, sure they started the jam deal, but I went to a concert with a friend once and found them to be the most boring band on the planet. Not trying to start anything, I just didnt understand why there was so much hype about their concerts when they would just noodle on and on without seeming to go anywhere musically.

I guess you had to be on heavy drugs to understand.

I saw both Aerosmith and the Stones in the 70s and I have to say that they sucked live, but I saw both of them a few years ago and they both sounded great. I guess they aged well.

Most over rated ? For me its U2. I just dont get it,I dont get Bono either. It may be that there music is so complex and intellectual that it is beyond my capacity to understand and appreciate it, but still I just dont like it. I have tried to like it but I just cant seem to get past the blahness of it. Pretty "deep" explanation eh?

That's funny, I came up with the same conclusion in the early 90's
about U2 - figured they were just over-my-head.

ummm....trvium...they suck big time...theyre like the boy band of metalcore...and theyre one of the bands that claims they are trying to be different now and they jus sound like really shit versions of metallica..and bullet for my valentine they suck too....jus my opinion...i cant really say anything bout older bands cause ive only been into metal/rock for about 6 or 7 years(used to be a big hip hop fan)but i never really got the hair metal thing..like white snake and motley crue and shit liek that...oh and insane clown posse...theyre jus ridiculous...

Jerry Garcia was a better banjo player than a guitarist. Bar None. Ive' been around bluegrass all my life and have heard all his music with old and in the way band, very good banjo player. Not a dead head though they suck.

Certainly the Dead are underrated in this folder. The thing about the Dead is, you had to "hear" them. Acquired taste. Like with weed, it could take five times before it finally works. As huge as the Dead were, which you'd need to be to be overrated, they did it all through playing live, no real record sales to justify their cultural magnitude. At any rate, the audience was addicted to the music inside the surface music. The Secret Circus, if you will. Some people heard it, others not so much. Not sure where Garcia stacks up in the pantheon-- he has his worshippers and detractors. But before dismissing the Dead it might be suggested one listen more deeply to the rhythm guitar work of Bob Weir, which is extremely original and compelling, or Lesh's bass playing or the drumming. There's a lot going on there.

GREAT POINT...I once heard Wynton Marsellis say that "art does not come to you, you have to go to it". Like anything you have to be open minded and tyr to understand why someone thinks there is meaning there.....

A great example is when I went to SFMOMA and say a painting of the color white....at first I thought that it was carzy but then after looking at it for a while I started to notice that my mind was projecting areas with different shades of off white onto what seemed to be blank...I the relized that I was now creating the art, that I was invloved and not pasive...which made me think about my relationship with everything and how I am an active part of it all....that is one fundlemental charaterist of art now day: to change or deepen our pespective....I would of never had that experence if I would of not invested effort into the moment.

i stick to what I said. obviously there was some great tunes and guitarists in the 80's but im talking about the : poison, motley crue, kiss, scorpions, def leppard and all that crappy stuff. The 80's was absolutley the worst era for music....besides maybe the new millenium but there are a few band that are better than all 80's bands combined.

hahah you CANNOT be serious. Ok you are entitled to your own oppinion, but you cannot call the Scorpions crap. You simply cannot call Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Mötorhead, Ozzy, Dio and many more amazing metal bands who had their best records in the 80's crap. (Ok maybe not Dio, he was way better with Rainbow in the 70's

I'd have to agree that U2 are not as good as their reputation, I don't hate them, but I do think that they are Massively overrated!

The other day on the Radio the DJ was banging on about how Amazing U2 are, and my girlfriend had to listen to me for about an hour moan about how evryone and their dog seems to big them up, as I said, I dont Hate them, I dont dislike them even, they don't do anything for me, I just don't get the hype! Infact its creepy, especially when so many amazing bands/artists seem to slip under the radar into obscurity.

During my rant to my gf, I summed them up as this -

"to me they just sound like simple minds with a chip on there shoulder"

(and that is nothing against simple minds)

Somebody who is extremely underrated though... Ray Lamontagne. That guy puts soul into everything he does.

Overrated... RHCP is a bit overrated. Good band, but when those guys talk in interviews, you'd swear they think they are like the Beatles of California or something... Flea is amazingly talented, but the rest of it sort of feels arrogant to me.

That Vedder song was written by a Canadian Singer and Songwriter. The name scapes my mind.

And to my shock, BONNO was on the back cover, are they serious!! What about Joplin? or Bob Marley, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan or Stevie Wonder, The Stones or Zepp (my personal vote) the list is endless???

Hell I'd even understand if they had Madonna or some other 'pop' icon, as much as I think they suck ass, at least you could argue that they were targetting a different market,

But bonno?? in his genre there are stacks of people more deserving the cover spot, stacks and stacks of them!! Hell, Robin Williams has had some good rolling stone covers, why not him, play it safe use mork! EVEN DR HOOK FOR PETE'S SAKE, at least they did a song about it, Maybe I'm getting too hot under the collar about the back cover of a book, But it goes to show (here comes my point) that it is (often) the Media who are responsible for people ending up overrated, they say that X and Y are the tits, and dumb asses who need to be told what to like eat it up like a free dinner, and the worst thing, the act/artist themselves end up believing it and wind up big headed arses!
And don't tell me that "its cause U2 have sold lots of records" they may have, but not as many as lots of others, so that don't wash with me, its just 'the man' for some reason deciding to give publicity and cudos to someone who (imo) deserves it less than many others, many of them no longer with us and deserve our respect for the memories and bodies of work they have left us with. (i.e. i was happy with the lennon choice)

I REALLY don't mean to offend any U2 fans, if you like them then good for you, I mean that!

I just don't U2's brilliance rubbed in my face that by someone who has Britnet Spears tapes in their glove box.

The Scorpions were far from crap (IMO), or an 80's band, as far as 80's hair bands go.
