Howdy all, this reminds me of a Link Wray quote when he talks about how Elvis was talking about being poor and white. He said something to the effect of

Remember Kurt Cobain's tee shirt that said "corporate magazines suck". Any band that falls into the "corporate rock" genre would have to be the most over rated imo. But I am a self confessed crank. Over rated seems to be the way one makes total success.

U2 , maybe back when. No explaining taste though and there really ought to be enough room for everybody to like any music they want.

Without a doubt Elvis was the king of overratedness. The disproportion of his talent/creativity to his amazingly huge (and completely insane) fanbase is simply EPIC!

Of course nowadays, there are a ton of overrated bands. For the life of me I cannot determine what exactly is the appeal of most popular rock bands today. From the whiney "emo" bullshit, to the angry militant "nu-metal", I'm just lost.

i'm ok with elvis creativity... but he had talent... i think he is important in the history of music because he brought blues, rythm and blues, rock and roll to a white audience... this guy said in '50 that he likes and plays gospel, blues and black music... sometimes i really wonder if elvis is not the one who turned blues to r'n'r... "that's all right mama !"

i'm really not a fan, but we have to give him back what belongs to him... and, comon', objectively, some of the songs in the '68 black leather session are just so god damn rough and good

Yeah, not to take anything away from what he did for music... I just think he's gotten a lot more hype than I think he deserves.

it depends on how you rate a band.. i already talked about that with the kiss fan here above Tpsreport...

i will never rate a band based on popularity, succes, public opinion etc... because i think that a majority of the public has no taste and doesn't even know what he's listning to... 90% of the public like shit...

i rate a band on what he brought in music, changes, experimentations, and how it influences other bands...

As do most of us here. The point is comparing the results of that rating system to results of overall success. WE obviously don't rate bands based on "success", which is why this thread exists in the first place.

id have to say that the new g'n'r (i wont refer to it by its actual name for obvious reasons) are MAJORLY overrated!

i mean cmon, this album is 13yrs in the making, from a hack who (in my eyes) stole a well known band name and butchered it with mediocre musicians (buckethead excluded as he left the band and is tallented)
...and everyone is dieing to get ahold of this album and see them live.

ive heard the leaked songs and by god it sounds like axl rose singing on an up-and-comming modern band - you know the ones where they are completly tallentless but are either good looking or can write a song comprised of powerchords which is 'boppy' enough to be poplular.

THAT is overrated!

I would agree with U2 being overrated, especially The Edge. Everyone says he plays amazing yet simple melodies, but probably cuz he just doesn't have any technical skill
