Re: Poll, The Blues !

My love of The Blues was through Clapton and Greeny, whether this is considered real Blues I don't know. From this ''White boy Blues'' came
the ''Blues Rock'' of the later '60s , and it is this music that I listen to most of all. I do still love a lot of the early BluesBreaker stuff and for me it was Clapton at his best, Busrt toting and with fire in his belly.

Re: Poll, The Blues !

Single, Brother I do consider that " Real Blues, " Mayall himself i still consider the real father of British Blues , and man could he find the the best Blues guitarists, His biggest problem was holding on to em in the band , I got my REAL Blues education , as many guys my age did, by finding out Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, ect got it from the early blues guys, but I gotta say it was EC who opened the door for me . and any guy worthy enough to be adopted by Muddy Waters as a son, which Eric was, is testement that he is indeed a Bluesman

Well, to many here in the US, Clapton and Hendrix, they were like they were from another planet, the other guys started creeping out of the woodwork, like Johnny WInter, Micheal Bloomfield, Roy Buchanan, who had always been into the blues but its popularity with white audiences hadnt yet hit , England didnt see or suffer the same kind of racial problems that the US had, thats how most Americans had been blocked by the Blues , The Largest mostly white audience BB King ever had played for, was opening for Cream , at Madison Square Garden , then many other blues guys were then opening for newer rock acts into the late 70s

Re: Poll, The Blues !

I love blues, but I don't know how to play a lot of cool bluesy kinda stuff.

I try to play music from all genres... But, I think blues, what I think to be classic rock, and the music I listen to on a daily basis are primarily what I learn on my own time.

Blues are probably the ultimate form of music in my opinion. A good blues artist will make you feel what he feels with his guitar, and not a lot of genres can do that. I get goose-bumps when I hear good blues.

Re: Poll, The Blues !

Well, My Key to playing blues is, Take all the bad or crazy experiences of a day, a week or even a bad year, Hit your notes and try to speak those emotions, but it dosent always have to be sad and or bad, even good experiences expressed,
Sometimes you say it with a whispered note, some times a scream and then again sometimes somewhere in between the two
Anyone whos proficiant in guitar can play the scales of the blues, but its conveying the feeling and venting your soul, To me thats where the Blues is at, and its my therapy, my soul cleansings and my meditation tool

Re: Poll, The Blues !

I love the Blues but my problem is letting go when I play. I feel weird doing it in front of people. I do play blues better when I close my eyes and just feel it. I don't know why I have such a hang up about it in front of people.

Thats awesome. I think that is pretty much the essence of blues and how they should be played.

I'm not all that proficient with guitar yet, so maybe thats my problem

Sounds like a variation on " stage willies"? My recommendations to newbies who come out to jam and are a lil nervous, dont look at the audience, look at the other musicians , and or close your eyes and just focus on the tunes ( if you can play with your eyes closed) and just feel the rest of the band , when you can let go, even half way , you will be playing far more naturally and by feel

Since I consider most Rock to be derived from blues, I made the middle vote.

But for a while I was very much into what I term classicalRock. Not so much the sweeping arpeggios type of the Malmsteens and others.
But to me blues is more of a feel than anything.
Hell Ive even been known to play C&W. If I like it I try to learn it.

100% bluesman. sometimes i try to jazz it up a little by throwing in some modes over the changes. I think they used to call it uptown blues back in the 70's

Re: Poll, The Blues !

I only listen to the Blues, period. It's what I like. It's the only genre of music that I get excited about. Sometimes I'm into slow grooves, sometimes fast. Sometimes minor stuff, sometimes jazzy flavored tunes. Lately I've been in an up tempo funky blues mood. I always like to swing, sometimes big band horn stuff and other times small guitar oriented combo's. Some day's I'll listen to T-Bone Walker then switch to Otis Rush for some of that Westside groove, maybe some Magic Sam too. It's just about endless the places you can go. I always want me some Albert King. Geeeze that guy f%*&'s me up, he plays those in-between notes. I was listening to "I'll Play The Blues For You" the other day and his solo just destroyed me, I just started talking to myself. Damn that guy could weave a solo like nobody else. I host a Blues Jam every Thursday night in Frederick Maryland. Yeah, it's the Blues for me.

Re: Poll, The Blues !

I love the blues and it's where I started. But I laugh heartily everytime I see some schlub cop Eric Clapton and SRV licks all night note for note with the bowel twister guitar face. You know exactly what you're in for when you see " the hat and the strat" Achhhh, awful.
Take and make your own. That's where I've always come from.
Blues provided the classic form, it's what you do with that.

I grew up listening to BB King, Albert King, Elmore James and Otis Rush. The blues are definitely in my heart and soul. I try my best to inject a little blueishness in everything I play.
