Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

Haven't heard much of Derrick Trucks, but otherwise all of the above.

EVH, especially. Lots of notes, lots of flash, little soul or substance

Also, Dickie Betts. Sorry, Duane was great and Dickie played well with him but standalone, his stuff just didn't cut it.

Ok, hate me for this, but I really don't get off on Stevie Ray's stuff either.
Joe Satriani. Nah.
Stevie Vai never did it for me either.

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

I tried Derriick Trucks. He did not work for me.

Same with Lenny Brough, Oscar Peterson (Piano ), Joe Pass, even Kevin Eubanks.
Guess I'm not a big Jazz fan, eh?

At times I like Larry Carlton, but not always.

Earl Clue, nah.

EVH, only the first album matters. The rest should RIP as far as I care.

For the most part not a Page fan or Clapton. Both have their moments, but Clapton is not consistent and Page is, but I have only one cd from either of them at this time, so they just don't matter to me I guess.
I do like the reunited Cream DVD and will likely get the reunited Zep one though.go figure........

Roy Buchanan can wear me out with the treble tone, but I like him.

I've been to a G3 tour and found Satriani and Vai both incredible, but not pulling me into their music. The third guy, Kenny Wayne Shepard simply did Hendrix covers very well but bored me because of this.

I like Fripp, then I don't like Fripp. Depends on my frame of mind I guess.

Yingyang Malmsteen He should lay off the cookies if he still wants to wear spandex!

I concur. He is awesome with an orchestra though. He wrote an entire long piese for him and orchestra that is wicked pissah!
He always has the worst vocalists on his records and in his bands. What's with that.?

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

In the case of Knopfler and Cray.....IMHO....these gentlemen are singer/songwriters....the guitar is a tool that supports these abilities.

Some guys are JUST guitarists......Waddy Wachtel, Jeff Beck, Elvin Bishop, J Geils, et al.....

I consider them all too be fine players.....:wtf do I know ?

I've never tired one ( Scalloped neck), but they look like an entire change of approach is needed to play one. I tend to push harder than I should and even going to a ligghter gage string screws me up roaylly I guess I'm no pro..

Walter Trout,
these days Jeff Beck,
Steve Howe apart from The Yes Album, Fragile and Close To The Edge.
Jamie Humphreys (of whom it has often been said... Who??)
Daryl Sturmer (or whatever his name is, give me Mr. Hackett anytime)..

I agree
His entire approach to music is flawed- "cram as many notes as possible in the meter!!!"

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

To offer a youngster's opinion: (i'm only 23)
Mainly, I just can't stand all of the "guitarists" in today's new bands, ya know... emo and the like.

As far as older stuff, I don't much like Malmsteen either. Impressive yes. Music? No. Although I'm sure he could (and has) made some very nice music in his life.

Steve Vai I do like though, but probably because I so admire his work with the Bill and Ted and Crossroads movies. And sure, all Herman Li does is Shred mostly, but that entire band isn't meant to be taken seriously anyway.

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

Steve Vai
Eric Johnson
Joe Satriani
Yngwie Malmsteen

Most other guitar hero and shredder types that aren't in real bands. If I want to hear good instrumental music, I'll put on some classic jazz.

I'm just a ''Guitar Tart'' ,not much I don't like. I even saw Malmsteen and ,although I can't pretend I'd sit and listen to him at home or in the car,
the man has an incredible talent.
