Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on
i agree on the Hendrix thing, i mean hes an unbelievable songwriter but i hate when people say " oh you got that sweet Hendrix tone " he play a noisy strat, that was out of tune, and his "tone" is a trebley mess. i respect him as a writer but not a player.

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on
Yep, Neil Young. Although I have to admit, I always thought it might be cool to cover "Woodstock" and play his solo on that lick for lick. The only problem is, unlike a lot of guitar players who have a particular style and musical logic in their licks, as near as I can tell he's got none, which makes it doubly hard to figure them out!
![]() Also, +1 on Jerry Garcia. I know he was a good player, and I can see how, if you spent most of the 60's, 70's, and 80's traipsing around to Dead concerts with your mind flattened on acid, you might be into his style, but I just never got it, especially with that meek tone he had. Hendrix to me was a mixed bag. There were a lot of things he did that didn't strike me as very musical. On the other hand, he had some really cool chops that nobody else did and, with rare exceptions (see: SRV) nobody has approached since. |

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on
Eric Johnson ..... I mean WHO IS THIS GUY? completely overrated...I hate cliffs of dover
Steve Vai....created that HORRIBLE Jem guitar Petrucci...more bleh, all those chops and the only times I see feeling in his playing is when he doesnt use them Now I love SRV....some of his songs just run shivers down my spine (his cover of Little Wing). But then I started hearing the rest of his catalog.....everything sounds the same. |

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on
will I get flamed for this?
I still haven't heard anything by Jimmy Page that makes me understand all the recognition he gets as one of the greatest players ever. I like the covers of Hendrix's songs more then I like the originals. I like the SRV versions of his songs more, and I think Slash's Voodoo Chile is better.

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on
A lot of interesting comments. But...
Hendrix was not the most melodic of guitarists, but he could make a Strat shoot you between the eyes. And "All Along the Watchtower" is a life's guitar lesson in itself ( pentatonic licks, double stops, funk chords, slide, Wah). Neal Young: His lead work has no melody a all. But, somehow, it works. Especially on "Woodstock" and "Ohio." His songwriting is very melodic, however, and on acoustic guitar he's brilliant. Just MHO. |

jimmy page is a good lead blues/rock player. not amazing, but very good. but mr page's true genius lies in other places. ie: 1) his ability to improvise. 2) his acoustic work 3) his ability to use/blend so many different styles of music (reggae, blues, traditional english folk, etc) 4) his absolute mastery of the studio. his ability to compose and arrange is amazing. his use of mics is second to none. and some might add his ability to plagiaize and get away relatively scott-free.

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on
I like many guitarists mentioned here, but I have to be in the mood for some of them. I love EVH, but I have to be in the mood for it. Vai and Satch the same way, i can only take so much. Most of the time I prefer slow soulful solos.
They are all MUCH MUCH better than me, so who am I to judge.........

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on
I have to admit that there are a few that I do not really dig but, IMHO...I can and have learned something from everyone....I say just listen, it really can not hurt your playing to always bring respect and humilty with you...once again, just my thoughts

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on
One word: Dragonforce.
I went to Mayhem Festival over the summer, and I saw them. Their first song was kind of interesting, their second song was... just like the first song. By the time they got to the third song, I was done with them. they're undeniably talented, but they do one thing well, and do it to death. OTOH, I saw a young Australian band called Airbourne that knocked my socks off. They rip AC/DC off big time, but they were really good at it. Oh, and Mastodon, while they don't solo a whole lot, are tone gods. I remain floored. - D
