Joe Satriani. He's extremely talented, but I just dont get any feelings at all.

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

I like how some of the reasons for people not liking a guitarist, are others reasons FOR liking them.

Good thread here for digging up the liked/disliked artists from my old man's record collection and giving them a listen. Still going through his collection of Ted Nugent (one of his favs growing up).

And we're all civil! I'm going to like it here!

Myself, I'm not big into Clapton or Santana for example. I do prefer older style of rock playing than new ones... and I find that I'm more into players who seem to be able to convey emotion through their strings rather than the shredders.

Although nothing wrong with a good hard head banging metal piece every now and again!

Most other guitar hero and shredder types that aren't in real bands. If I want to hear good instrumental music, I'll put on some classic jazz.
Agree! I just of the whole rip it up, million notes a minute thang. Freddie King would embarrass 'em with one note. It's too polished and flashy. I want emotion and feeling!

As others have said, Clapton these days bores me to tears--Santana much the same. Eric by his own admission says the booze and drugs stole something from him.

I also have to say that EVH is someone else that has never really thrilled me.
I can't think of a single solo that I have head him do that I would listen to twice.

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

I really dont think anyone ever thought Kobain was a talented guitarist,
even Kobain himself. More of a singer, and I did like his scratchy voice.
But really, a Jagstang? I played one a year ago, didnt care much for it,
felt cheap, and sounded too bright.

+1 & X 1000 for Vai - he stuff really always bored me.

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

Wow not a single mention of Jerry Garcia. While I respect what the Dead managed to do I can't stand listening to them. You can also add me to the list of guys who aren't into shredding. Again I can respect what they do but I sure can't listen to Satch, Vai, or Malmsteen for pleasure.

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

Interesting topic, especially since many fasn take real offence when one is criticizing their idols...Well well...Where should I start:
- Van Halen: I dont really get it. Ok tapping...but it just doesnt sound great. Maybe to go watch..But would you seriously listen to Eruption with great pleasure if you were not a guitar player? I certainly wouldnt.
- Until recently, John Frusciante, but I got into it a bit
- Jeff Beck..I dont really enjoy anything else than Blow by Blow
- Knopfler: British charm, ok...But I dont find his playing nor his voice very original.
Always sounds kond of the same..Ok one or two cool riffs or melodies here or there,
but not very groundbreaking
- Steve Vai, Eric Johnson

You know what? When asked "which player does not turn you on?" I think one must distinguish between live performance and studio (=only audio) performance. There are some players I love I would not always be tempted to go see live, and some bands that would do a wonderful show and music live, but that just dont manage to capture that in studio..
I would go see Kiss and all the abnds mentioned above live, but I would not be turned on by their mueic per se.
