A real soft spoken gentle man.

Sure he had a few "Out there tunes" , but I'm betting few of us could invent or play Ariel Boundaries.

Any fulltime shredder loses me------it's all acrobatics with no feel.I don't mind fast at all,but I like the graceful aching thought out stuff (Carlton,Knopfler,Ford,Leslie West, ect).

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

I never got Johnny Winter. Not melodic. No dynamics. Always sounded like that kid at the high school dance who plays as fast as he can at every moment. Ted Nugent seemed completely overrated too. Someone played me a song by this kid, Johnny Lang, and my thought was (like Robert Cray), this is completely forgettable playing. Stevie Ray also sounded to me like 50 guys I grew up with who could play Hendrix licks note for note (and are now selling insurance or tending bars). Ritchie Blackmore had that great tone but his solos sounded too structured. Clapton hasn't progressed since the Derek and the Dominos LP. I can't even name 98% of the 90's metal shred guys. But I take nothing away from them. Its like dunking a basketball. If I could shred, I'd do it non-stop. Always loved Van Halen's playing and seemingly goofy attitude (although not a fan of his song writing).

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

Wow! Some of my absolute favorite players are being mentioned here - OUCH!

Derek Trucks = my current favorite player. Watch him with The Allman Brothers on Live At The Beacon Theater. He's not a flashy player, but has the best tone and really makes me feel something.

Joe Satriani is also one of my all time favorites. I don't like to see him get lumped in with "shredders" like Malmsteen, who does nothing for me. Satch uses speed when it is necessary, but also puts tons of emotion in his songs. Listen to "Rubina" from the Time Machine album. Great ballad.

Honestly, there are many of the great players that I have heard that don't do at least SOMETHING for me. Shred just for the sake of shred, Michael Angelo Batio, Dragonforce, etc. are about the only ones I can't listen to at all.

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

I love Joe, i was really into his stuff back in the 90's.
A freind of mine here in Chico even did some gigs with him.
I dont think of him as a shreder at all but tastier like Eric Johnson.
A freind of mine here in chico is freinds with Joe and i believe
he played a couple of gigs with him he also has some great
covers he did of Joes.

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

Eric Johnson.... he's very good but that lead tone and all those furry notes... I wanted to like hismusic and in fact I like some of it but it's an example of somebody who I should love and I just tolerate.

John Schofield... another guy who I should like but I don't. Well he's superb when he plays straight jazz but when he goes into "fusion" well, I just don't get it. Maybe I'm not clever enough.

Kirk Hammet... on the whole he's not that bad but sometimes he's very, very cringy. Out-of-tune bends and tasteless phrasing. Sometimes his playing is good most of the times it isn't, considering who he is.

and many more but those sprung to mind.

Thank you very much! I happen to like Joe very much too. If I had the choice of being able to play like any 1 guitarist of my choice, it would be Joe. He can fly on the fretboard but he can also play just a few notes ang get a lot of feeling. He just can't be classified as a shredder. He does have a lot of feeling in his playing. I think Flying in a Blue Dream is a great album.

Anyhow, back to the topic. A few that don't turn me on...Curt Cobain, I just don't get it. Never got into Jimi Hendrix or Malmsteen and Santana does absolutely nothing for me.

Quite agree, Speed isnt everything, Speed with no feeling is wasted notes
I think Derek Trucks is a great guitarist, I also think Joe Satriani is as well , Joe can play with feeling.

Wow!! I couldn't agree with you more about Kirk Hammet!!! ewww! I have nothing more to add on that topic. Not that I like to get into A vs. B as far as guitarists go, but growing up Metallica and Megadeth were huge. Metallica surely hit it bigger, but I laughed anytime that anyone said that Kirk Hammet is better than Marty Friedman as a guitarist. hahahahahahah. Not even in the same universe. Hammet might as well not even know what a guitar is compared to the skill and musicallity(a new word?) of Friedman.

I second this... Hammet is one of the most over-rated guitarists ever... The only solos I like of Metallica happen to be the more melodic ones that JAMES plays... how ironic...

And yes Marty, is the total opposite to Kirk, the most UNDER-rated man! Imagine if he was in Metallica instead of Kirk.... that would blow minds!

Same with Jake E Lee... Too bad he followed after Randy, and was followed by Zakk, otherwise he'd be given much more credit for us playing. What an incredible guitarist he is!

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

Jake got stuck in a bad place being after Randy
he is a totaly different type gutiarist an old school
plug in and rock guy, and then followed by Zakk
tough spot

Jake back in San Diego days was in a great band called
Rough Cutt, they were a blues rock band and i would
compare them to the greats like Free. I really wish they would
have recorded back then
Also he was playing as good as Eddie when Eddie was still
in Mammoth playing a different kind of music

he said it better than what I was going to say.

I can't stomach any guitarist who simply wants to show everyone how fast their fingers can move and make noise at the same time: UNLESS that noise fits well within the context of a good piece of music.

That's his style. Pushing the envelope. He's admitted that sometimes it worked out and sometimes it didn't.

I agree with some of those mentioned but foremost in my mind is Clapton. I just don't get it. I don't see how his playing stands out but at times he's also been critical of Jimmy. I did catch "Cocaine" the other day and have a little more respect for it but other than that.....

I'll toss Jack White of the whitestripes under the bus, I just don't get playing style at all. Pretty good song writer and a self proclaimed music historian, there is a term for that, just forgot what it is. raconteur?

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

I downloaded "Machine Gun" by Jimi, because its was voted the #1 rock solo ever.

To me it was 11 minutes of 6 string garbage..... Yuck!!!

Am I going to guitar hell for saying that?
