Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

Never thought of it as cheating, since it really is an old technique. The shredders simply brought it to a new unheard popularity of sorts. High gain Pickups and amps allowed for a lot of the sound.

Check out the guy in this amp demo. It starts kinda lame, but near the end, he has a great example of tapping to mimic a piano. Cool, not cheating, but not used everyday by 14 year olds in a pentatonic minor at GC

YouTube - Roland CUBE Street Battery Powered Stereo Amplifier

Oh, I bought the amp too, but still can't play like him................

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

I know its a real technique, and i do it to, just saying thats
what people used to say when it first came out
Its actualy been around for over 100 years on acoustic
if not longer, alot of Spanish guitarists, and classical guitarists
used it long ago.

Just in a rock and roll purest since, im not as big of a fan
of it, but i admit i do it to, but not as much as i used to
returning to old roots i guess.

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

I'm rootsy too, but do the tap harmonics and false harmonics a lot on my acoustics. Not so much on my electrics. I tried to go the legato route listening to Holdsworth and company. For me the EVH thing while exciting at first, wore thin about a decade before it was replaced by grunge.

Not I'm back to bending and going rootsy pentatonic with some majors thrown in for balance My high school jazz teacher would be frowning. "People bend notes when they have nothing to say" he would say.... Not great words of wisdom for us young and impressionable ones, was it. Damn Berklee college of music people

I love Van Halen ,especially the early stuff and I can understand why folks don't like the ''flash'', but nobody ever mentions Edwards killer rhythm work.

I think the first album is flawless! A masterpiece. It was a turning point in electric guitar history.

Never liked more than a few notes he played after that album though.
Judging by the responses here, I'm not alone. Can't put my finger on it ( Pun intended ), but that's how I feel.

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

wow, an over whelming response.

im with yall on the first 2 EVH albums... they are cool, i think i still have them in the basement along with a few choice others like
"toys in the attic" speaking of aerosmith I think they went too mainstream after like 82 or so, cant listen to them after that and will add Joe perry to my list for all his work after 82 lol

how about that Cloverdale page projoct in like 93.. another joke lol

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

Yes VH the first two albums kicked ass, they really seemed
to know thier direction then,
Same with Aerosmith, to me there is a big black hole
between both of thier first albums and later on

Perry was such a solid rock guitarist at the start
then he decided he was going to be so different he sucked

Man............making freinds today............

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

ahh Cold thats too funny. I hate to use the word sucked though. remember back in the early 70's they were pure blues influenced which is when i liked them

in the last 25 years they kinda went top 40 almost wedding bandish and that where they lost me

i guess good for them look at all the chicks today who love aerosmith as supposed to my high school days when the slogan in NY was "Rock lives disco sucks" and us rocker s couldnt get a date unless we blasted Rappers delight in the car

so my point is disco went dead but aerosmith evolved with the times and are still here, like it or not

Yup. For a lot of the world, it is all about getting the chics!
Too true.
I loved Aerosmith's first three albums, and bought them all until Night in The Ruts.
I was quite disillusioned when I found out that Hunter, not Perry did the intro lead work on "Train Kept a Rollin'". Still a great cover though

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

ok, I've been watching this thread for a while. I agree with a lot that's already been posted but again, like somebody else said, Your hero could be someone's zero. So I hope I don't offend anyone. It's not that I think they suck or lack passion, I just, don't get it.

Yngwie Malmsteen - premature and constant note ejaculation
Steve Via - weird
Tom Morello - weirder
Steve Howe - technically amazing but it does nothing for me
Eric Clapton - I never was a fan of his phrasing. Too uptight for my taste.
Keith Richards
Edge
John Frusciante - good for a steady funk vamp
Santana
Eddie Van Halen - lost interest after Fair Warning.
Trey Anastasio
Anything from the grunge era, that dip from Limpbiskit and the kid from Hanson

Thats not so bad though.

"Turn you on" in this context implies that the "Guitarist" has some talent or expertise that you just don't like for some reason.

Now if the Thread had been titled:

"A person who pretends to play Guitar and has no talent at all" - That would be the list that I would be at the top of...

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

Without reading anyone elses posts... So I don't have to defend my own heroes...

John Petrucci *amazing, but I'm just not into it*

Kirk Hammett *wah maniac. Not overly intersting to me*

Zakk Wylde *used to be a big influence, now he just plays what his marketing team tells him to*

Trivium *in general, not my thing. Good players, but a tad over published in Guitar mags.*

Eric Clapton *he's not God. Great player, but his music doesn't rock me like it does a lot of other people. For my money, Robbie Robertson has Clapton by the balls*

Hmm. I could go on, but I need time to think about it.

And to agree with the Father *Rev* and my other Brother *Hed* myself.

I know how to play, I'll give myself that much, but when I run out of ideas, or I'm just not totally into it, I find myself OVER playing. Too many notes, not enough vibe. I need work, and work I shall do.

When I'm in the zone, I , and others know it and feel great bout my oplaing. When I'm not in the zone, which is most of the time unfortunatly, I'm not worth being near. Boring scales and mechanics with lifeless feeling. I'll get in a funk and
stop playing for years. Then realize something is amiss, or is it something I miss?
