Well thats exactly what I told my brother when I compared his older style of lead playing to Neil Youngs and at first he thought I was complementing him, I used both boiling cat and chaulkboard analogies to get my point across Stills I thought was a lil more tolerable
Gotta toss Bono, and Bruce SPringsprang in there

Nah, no as blasphemous around here as saying you don't care for Page
Jimi made the world different and deserves credit there. I find him so over played that I only have one of his CDs too ( Like Zep's ). His Music is OK and bad to great like a lot of musicians, but I rarely go out of my way to listen to Hedndrix.
A guy who works for me went to Woodstock, and Saw Hendrix six other times as well. He feels, well, differently than I do

At times I find Santana boring, but his highlights to me, the Moonflower album, is a masterpiece. He is predictable, but I do play him a fair amount.
I saw Vai,.Good flash, no soul for most songs.......Next.........

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

Trey Anstasio and other assorted jamband guitarists NOT named Jerry Garcia.
I loathe Kiss, but like Ace's solos.

I love Jimmy page, but some of his live stuff was brilliant and other times he sounded out of tune and playing the wrongs notes. Ironically, that's what I LIKE about Kurt Cobain. As far as "getting it", I guess it's like what I've been told about the 60's and 70's, "You had to be there". After all that late 80's cheese metal and the plethora of blues cheddar in the wake of SRV, Cobain and his out of tune guitar stopped hair metal (at least until hair metal's Down syndrome afflictedcousin, nu metal came along)long enough for me to grow up happy and believing I had seen music change for the better. Too bad I was wrong.

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

All very technical, and talented, but the just don't float my boat:
1. Steve Vai
2. Yngwie Malmsteen
3. Eric Clapton (After Layla... the Strat years) The Gibson Era...My Hero.

4. Most "Shredders" I've worked around machinery for 35 years, and when I go home that's the last thing I want to hear.

I would have to agree in part with this, but I think the Live in Hyde Park video shows that Eric still has something special and I really like his From The Cradle album, his strongest for years..

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

What did I read one time, Something like this. "There plays Eric Clapton, all fey and lifeless". I thought it was harsh, but true of most stuff since Layla.

Slowhand, etc, not my speed. Like was said above, Eric Clapton on a Gibson= my hero!

Clapton live, Still is no slouch, some of his records might have really been terrible but when he gets on a stage, its surreal, having seen him three different times live, I was never disapointed , more amazed and awed than anything . Second time seeing him , was the From the Cradle - Nothing But the Blues Tour

Glad He does it for folks live. He must, he keeps touring and making folks happy
I hear Pat Matheney is like that. I find his albums noninvolving, but have heard from anyone who ever saw him live that he is a dynamo and fun showman to boot.
Funny how those two worlds can be so different for an artist, the recording world and the stage.

I dunno, I dont find it such a mystery after having played in front of a few large audiences in my past, When the crowd feeds you their appreciation, if you cant channel that back to the audience , I think ya ought to be thinkin a new line of work, Studios are somewhat more sterile environments , Stuff there can really really be like gettin down to hard labor

Yea, but I think we've all agreed that all the mentioned players are fantastic guitarists. It's just that 'personal factor' that counts.

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

I dig Paige's riffing and rhythms, but when he plays lead it always makes me really nervous cause theres those times when you think it might completely fall apart. If im listening to someone solo, I dont want to feel nervous. Some people dig that, I guess i just dont.

Re: Guitarist That Just Dont turn you on

I'm going to make a general statement, and not point out specific guitarists or genres:

if a guitarist is more into playing a bazillion notes per second (for the sake of being fast and flashy) rather than playing with FEELING....i don't wanna listen to it.

I'd rather hear a mediocre guitarist who plays with a passion, rather than someone who is technically proficient and robotic.

I agree,.......i hate "Look at how fast i can go" showoffs
that are just speed robots, but cant even play one blues note
with feeling,
you can put more into one note, played with feeling, than 1,000 notes
of blasing (non musican) noise
