Who are today's greatest blues artists?

Hey everyone, I notice a lot of threads praising the legends like Clapton, Page, Green and Gibbons but can anyone recommend who they feel are today's greatest blues players? I know guys like Derek Trucks and John Mayer have brought the blues back to contemporary audiences but since I normally listen to older music I'm not really aware of anyone else.

Oh and here's a lad who may be one of the next blues torchbearers:

not everyone's cup of tea, but Seasick Steve is worth a listen, or two...

He's actually got more history than you'd expect, and Ive got tickets to see him in January

Re: Who are today's greatest blues artists?

If I want blues, I go to the originals like Buddy Guy and Albert King, Lightnin' Hopkins, Robert Johnson, B.B. King, Albert Collins, etc.

Them white boys are just tryin' to copy those guys anyway.

I really like Johnny A for being just a little different. He isn't exactly blues all the time, but he CAN PLAY the blues!

Jonny Lang, ( he dosent use the H) recorded a new album last year that was pretty much straight off pop rockish with ZIP For Blues, a friend of mine who was a major fan of his earlier works went to see this concert show and Lang only played ONE BLues song, Much of the audience I hear was rather disapointed with his new turn. including my good friend and jam buddy John

Re: Who are today's greatest blues artists?

Funny, a good friend of mine, who is quite a bit younger went to see Clapton in the '90's. She came back from the concert disappointed . He played few of his hits and a lot of old blues. She wanted the pop star not the blues enthusiast.
Can't please'em all the time I guess.

Re: Who are today's greatest blues artists?

Hmm I saw that tour. Second time of three I had seen Clapton live, The record and the tour definitly let anyone who wasnt hiding under a rock know that it was going to be blues, dubbed both after the album From The Cradle/ Nothin' but the blues. and Thats all Eric and the band played, Blues standards that had inspired and moved him . The amount of vintage guitars and amps were amazing as well, Eric had no less than 8 different amplifiers on stage, some as small as 3-5 watters . Well mic'ed of course, The sound work was excellent and Eric, no matter what always gives 110% on stage , He didnt at the LA Show but on numerous other occaisions on the tour even brought out a red sunburst Les Paul .

Re: Who are today's greatest blues artists?

The contemporary West Coast Blues sound I like is being played by a lot of cats, guy's like Kid Ramos, Kirk Fletcher, Rick Holstrom, Sean Costello and Jr Watson. I remember Hollywood Fat's who was playing blues in the 70's-80's. I haven't listened to the radio in years so I read the credits on cd's and search the players out, then search their players etc. There are some very gifted players out there that fly under the radar. Take Anson Funderburgh for example. You'll never see him on TV, you don't see him in the Hall of Fame, and you won't see him in the next Crossroads dvd but Anson is one of the most respected out there. So, to answer the question I'd guess most people won't hear some of today's best blues artists because they aren't mainstream for whatever reason. I'd guess most people have never heard of blues singer/songwriter James Harmon who in my humble opinion is one of todays best. How about Rick Estrin and................

I agree with every one of these. I've seen Anson and Holmstrom and Jr. Watson is one of my very favorites. There is a great live CD with him playing with the Kim Wilson blues band called [I]Smokin Joint. He plays on a big junk of the CD. I'm pretty big on Ronnie Earl as well. His live CD with the broadcasters and the one he did with Jimmy Rogers before he died should be in every blues fan's collection. You mention James Harmon and I agree there too. He's one hell of a harp player too!

...Oh and I wanted to add Duke Robillard to the list. I saw him a couple of years ago and he just blew me away. Amazing jump/swing blues player, but can also rock. Lately I have been into Bonamassa too, but I guess when it all comes down, I gravitate towards the old school guys like Ronnie Earl, Duke Robillard or Jr. Watson.
