Re: The Return Of Led Zeppelin

I would sever a limb to get in the door to one of those shows

on a side note-
It's nice to see Rolling Stone be a bit kinder to them in recent times(I framed the cover that declared Zep the heaviest band of all time last year), RS was never too keen on Zeppelin when they were in their prime in their reviews(WTF-what was not to like?)- but, you would expect as much from the magazine that a big hand in the destruction of Cream...

They ran a review of a Cream concert in '67/'68 and were horribly critical, saying something to the effect of "Clapton is a blues cliche", which made him faint when he read it in a restaurant. He said that it hurt him really deeply to hear that, and at that point he talked with Ginger and Jack and decided that it was time to go in another direction.

The review for the first album is terrible, and the one for the second album is incredibly sarcastic, and the third was recieved with a lukewarm review, saying things like "Since I've Been Loving You" represents the obligatory slow and lethally dull seven-minute blues jam". All incredible musical milestones defaced by RS.

Re: The Return Of Led Zeppelin

i know this is a zep thread but by the time i started to read things like RS in the early 80's i couldn't see what made them such a beacon of the "counter culture"....then like now it seems to be nothing but full of ads/fluff.

I know what you mean

It's really nothing special, sometimes I see people reading it with it out for every one to see like its going to somehow make them cooler, but I really think it has gotten incredibly lame.

Anyway, the Rolling Stone will never get any money from me, and you won't catch me dead with a copy. I've read things they've written, and their famous lists, and they're awful. They know little to nothing, and all their fame and glory is based on subjectivity and favoritism. Keith Richards one of the 10 best guitarists ever, my ass

Yes thats the way they felt too, and why they broke up after John Bonham's death, I agree.

Re: The Return Of Led Zeppelin

Well, if you listen to the albums front to back, you clearly notice how Led Zeppelin is built on Jimmy Page. No doubt all in the group were great in their own right... but as I read somewhere "Jimmy Page was destined for greatness, thus sprang forth Led Zeppelin".

The first three albums are Jimmy Page + the Led Zeppelin Band, and starting from IV, even though Page is still clearly dominant there, the other band members gain foothold in the music little by little, until, with Physical Graffiti (in my opinion the best album of Led Zeppelin, while perhaps not the best album of Page's), the whole group is at their best as a group and not as Jimmy Page + appendages. Presence is still at their peak IMO, though not as classic and stunning as Phys Graff. After that, LZ, while still being superior to anyone, kinda lost juice compared to their first ten years, which is completely understandable.

But yeah, maybe LZ IS page is exaggerated, but that LZ is built upon and around Page, is undeniable.

Re: The Return Of Led Zeppelin

I think without any of the four members it would never be Zep...None of them could ever be replaced. They all contributed in their own way. All their albums were great in their own right. I feel that Physical Graffiti was a high point for them, but Achillies Last Stand from Presence was some of the greatest guitar work Page put to tape. For me every guitar overdub, line , and lead in that song was amazing.. Since I was a kid I've loved Zep and I can remember the first time I heard the lead from Since I've Been Loving You, man did that make me want to play guitar..
