Slide Guitar

I play a bit of slide guitar. Haven't seen the topic discussed much here, and thought I'd open a thread regarding the subject.

I use a pinky slide, chrome, by Ernie Ball. I play in standard tuning, and I don't have the action raised up, just my regular action. I damp with both my playing and picking hands. I always play slide in "dirty" mode, never clean.

I'd be interested in some tricks, techniques, types of slides used by other guitarists, and some of the songs that you play slide on. I play a pretty good version of "Statesboro Blues" (Duane Allman is my hero!).

Thanks!

Re: Slide Guitar

Hey, I've just started learning slide too.

Bought a chromed Jim Dunlop jobby.

Pink Floyd's "The Great Gig in the Sky" has some really nice simple slide over a piano progression, I've been learning that as my friend who I normally jam guitars with is also an accomplished pianist.

I been struggling with slide for over 30 years, I can only do some rudementry licks
Great Gig in the Sky, Damn one of my all time favorite Floyd songs, Davild Gilmore uses a lap steel or a lap wood really for that number
I use glass for slide, My fingers sometimes are just a tad too heavy, My buddy Stu does Slide smooth as as clean as Duane, He can pull of any and all of Duanes slide licks and has at one point or another, met all the Allman Brothers and jammed with some of them

Joe actually got a quick lesson from Duane Allman, in an airport they were both in at the same time, funny thing Joe and Duane also share a birthday with Duane being older

Man, I'm envious of your friend, Don! That would be SOOOO great to meet the Brothers! Stu must be a killer player. I find that you have to be very dilligent and approach slide totally differently than regular playing. Thing is, I don't practice it enough. I used to be pretty good at it, but since I don't have the time to practice as much, I have to try to get the feelin' back!

IF I ever need slide tracks, which I do for a tune or two, I am callin Stu

Here's a clip of my solo "slide" interpretation of Robert Johnson's "Walkin' Blues." Done on my very low action 74 Gib LP Std. Not the best of sound quality but enjoy.

Re: Slide Guitar

i play a good bit of slide on my electric and i say the heavier the better. heavy brass for acoustic is the way to go and for electric i say go with heavy glass. i got my heavy glass from diamond bottleneck, they make a nice glass slide and i picked mine up for $50. a quality product. for now i only play slide clean through my '65 TRRI but clean slide is all you need through that amp. i also play on the pinky finger, which is something i recommend you do. one cool techinque i picked up a week or so ago from this guy who is giving me a few lessons. move the slide in a circular motion versus side to side over a given note and you get a pretty cool effect.

Re: Slide Guitar

Dobro Houndog and CBG's and make my own wine bottle slides. I've used just about everything for a slide from purchased glass, brass, and medicine bottles as well as bone and some old lap steel slides of my grandpa's. Still go back to the wine and champagne bottle slides.

In fact I keep a CGB and slide here in my office at work and play it pretty much everyday.

Re: Slide Guitar

The Warren Haynes Video has some good information, lick and tech stuff.
When ABB Live at the fillmore came out around '70 Guitar Player Magazine interviewed Duane. That's when I first learned about the glass Corocidin bottle. I promptly went to Peoples Drug store pulled one off the shelf and peeked inside........plastic. Did another, same thing. Took me 3-4 times till I found a glass one, still have it.
I've listened to Robert Johnson, Duane, Lowell, Ry Cooder and Derek over the years but then I discovered Robert Nighhawk's Live on Maxwell Street, Bam! That's where I live.
