Great Music IS being made, but it's NOT on the radio!

I have to admit something...

If it wasn't for websites like this one, or social networks, or even talking to my friends, I would have NO IDEA at all about some of the fantastic music that is being made...RIGHT NOW.

It's being MADE, it's HERE, it's BEEN HERE, but the radio stations, owned by the big giant conglomerates, do NOT play this music. At all.

Hell, most of these bands aren't even new. Think I hear Joe Bonamassa anywhere on the radio? No. How about Warren Haynes and Gov't Mule? No, despite the fact he's appeared onstage with some real industry heavyweights. How about Grace Potter and the Nocturnals? Susan Tedesci and Derek Trucks? Carolyn Wonderland? Gary Clark Jr.?

No...No...and more No. Hell, some of these people have performed at the White House...but they still can't get on the radio.

This isn't metal, this isn't even hard rock. A lot of this is just straight up rock and roll and blues with a rockier edge. Tame, mainstream stuff.

All of it has to be ordered online as well, or a specialty store has to be visited to get any of the merchandise from these groups. What makes it worse...you're more likely to see them tour Europe FIRST because they're...well-known out there. It's like the clock for contemporary blues rock STOPPED in America and it kept running everywhere else in the world.

I don't know whether to begrudge them or just acknowledge that it's a sparse, divided culture. Whatever. Maybe I should just STFU, put on some good tunes, and jam along...with the radio in the OFF position.

Yup all good stuff. Some of it is being on the radio, the good radio stations. Radio is overall crap though (FM speaking)

Unfortunately, that's all I get in my area (Sacramento, CA).

These folks are more likely to get radio play in Europe. This is Roots Rock music. What a sad state of affairs...

(Example: Bonamassa got a hair up his bum and decided to do a mini-acoustic tour. Think he did that in the USA? Oh hell no he didn't!)

Hear, hear, Sentry!

But, not all is lost. I've found that as you reintroduce people to the current crop of good stuff, they really enjoy it. Then they forget about it, because it isn't being shoved down their throat 24/7.

Some of us won't forget, Post. I need good music to jam along with!

These guys even get together sometimes and do amazing cover songs as well. I gotta admit, I'm really starting to go on a big Warren Haynes kick. My stepdad just bought 3 of his CD's online. I'm probably going to have to get into DVD's to get stuff like this on file...

These guys even bring out the best...in people I wouldn't imagine. I think this is the best I've ever heard Joe Satriani sound in this next clip. And no knock to Neil Young, but this is an example of taking someone's song and assuming complete and total ownership of it..

Re: Great Music IS being made, but it's NOT on the radio!

Good music is out there. But it's not always where you expect to find it.

A couple of weeks ago, the open mic I normally play was so damned good it could've been a compilation album. Everything from metal, to blues, to riff rock, to real soul music, to a bizarre fusion of country and hardcore. The house band alone is incredible. But it was just something else. Each performer, group/act brought something different and raised the bar without things becoming a pissing contest. That was something very cool. I haven't had that much fun at a music event (and played/sang as well) in a long time.

Re: Great Music IS being made, but it's NOT on the radio!

I really agree, and it's not just blues rock...

I like The Dollyrots.

I have been fascinated with this band, and have heard all of 1 song of theirs on radio, and that was last year.
I think they write and play very good music-smart, well done, and even funny at times.
They seem well regarded in Europe-they are touring the UK right now.

I have even emailed a big area station in Philly, and the 1 response from 3 different people was pretty unenthusiastic.

They wrote a song about this very thing...It's not rock & roll, it's Rock Control...

And this one, Big Mouth

I have ranted about this before. I'm 46 and have loved punk for about 28 years. (wow, time flies!!!) I get so sick of old people talking about Black Flag and the Dead Kennedys. I'm not stuck in my childhood.

I love the Dollyrots, and have since I first heard them in about 2005. If you like them, try Go Betty Go and Tsunami Bomb. They are both amazing, with Tsunami Bomb being one of my Top 5 favorite punk bands.

Even if you like traditional rock and roll, there are a ton of new groups to find on youtube. There is no reason to listen to Led Zeppelin for 40 years.

rant off
