Re: For fans of Tom Petty and Mike Campbell's playing

I saw them in 2010 with ZZ TOP. I have to admit, that until then, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers had been more like background music to me, rather than something I would intentionally listen to.

That was THE Best concert I have ever been to! I am now solidly a Tom Petty & Heartbreakers fan.

I also like the fact that Mike Campbell is a fairly down to earth guy. Story goes, that he is a huge George Harrison fan. Back in the Traveling Willburys days, they wanted Campbell to play lead on a track. He was so nervous playing in front of GH, that he could not do it, and left it for Harrison to do. Sounds like something that would happen to me.

I was also impressed with the story and video of the kid who built a Tele like the one they used on "Refugee". Word got back to the band. They sent him tickets to a concert w/backstage passes, and asked him to bring the guitar. He met with, and played with, Mike Campbell back stage. Campbell used the kid's guitar for that song in the show that night.

Gotta like guys that remember that the fans put them where they are.

Re: For fans of Tom Petty and Mike Campbell's playing

I was fortunate to see Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers back in 1987. It was a 'three parts' show; first Roger McGuinn played a solo set, then came a set from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and finally (headliner) Bob Dylan played a 2 hour long set backed by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and they were all joined in the end by McGuinn. Great times!!

Re: For fans of Tom Petty and Mike Campbell's playing

Is there a guitarist here who played covers in the 90s who hasn't torn up a house with this a time or two? This song was de rigeur around here back then:

Beautifully simple lines. Light into this one and watch a dance floor start grinding.

Re: For fans of Tom Petty and Mike Campbell's playing

Another FYI, in case you didn't already know...Mike Campbell played lead in Don Henley's "Boys of Summer"

He is the kind of guitatist is prefer, very melodic. Not a shredder or flashy player, but it always suits the song.

Why play 8 or 9 notes, when 1 or 2 will do.

You just have to put them in the right place.

My 2 cents...

Indeed! And a fkin great job he did!, afaik Campbell co-produced the whole album (Building the Perfect Beast) together with Don Henley as well .

Mike Campbell also played a major role in the creation of another DH album The End of the Innocence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, amongst other duties co-writing (+playing on) this one with J.D. Souther and Henley ;

My favorite Heartbreakers songs:

I've played all of those live at one point or another.

I also have the new(er) Damn The Torpedoes Classic Albums DVD. Highly worth it as that is my fav Petty album. It features Mike's new '59 Burst too.
