Re: Hendrix

only way to really dig what Hendrix did is to read Martin Heidegger...

extremely simplified: Hendrix actualized what electric guitar's spirit was and that spirit was part of the geist of the times

I love how he was so ahead of his time.
So many guitarists nowdays just play tired old blues and classic rock and don't do anything new. Nothing against blues and classic rock but us guitarists need to move forward.

Re: Hendrix

i don't agree that Hendrix was ahead of his time. that's an easy cliche for anyone who is innovative or different. i think he was perfectly OF his time.

the late sixties... for a while there, LSD was legal, pot was the yin to acids yang. Vietnam, black power, feminism, civil rights, civil disobedience, free love and free spirits. there were re-energisations in all the arts, music, dance, theatre and others. guitar effects were a new idea and so was driving a loud amp into distortion, but Jimi wasn't the only one doing that. also i'm pretty sure that even back then there were still plenty of hacks rehashing the blues into cliched classic rock.

i think that Jimi was a fantastic musician and an incredible guitar player.
perfectly OF his time, but also hugely influential in the shaping of that time. he was a driving force in that re-energisation of the arts and not simply a passenger.
he wasn't a part of the 60's...he was a part of what MADE the 60's what they were.

There was nobody at that time doing what Jimi was doing. Technically they may have been playing the same song titles and the same notes, but that's where the similarity stops.

Like saying a Volkswagen Jetta and a Lamborghini Countach are the same because they are both cars - have wheels, windows, paint, seats... etc.

Not only was Jimi ahead of his time, he's still ahead OF the time. Jimi was not of this world.

I get what you are saying - that he was a product of his time.
I would offer this - had he been born in 1800 or 2300 he still would have been turning the music world upside down.
It was not the times that made his thought patterns what they were.
He would have influenced any era, musically speaking.

I can hear Clapton and Beck and Buddy Guy licks in Jimi's work, but they never played them like Jimi did.

Re: Hendrix

You know where I think Hendrix really got "ahead of his time"? In his use of the studio as another instrument. His musical vision, and the way he went about fulfilling it, put him in select company ... The Beatles, Pink Floyd, perhaps the Who.

Re: Hendrix

Electric Ladyland was a hoot, for sure.

You can also watch his evolution as a player - he knew more about chords and fills then anything in his early career.
As time progressed his guitar found its voice and the tone changed from clean Hey Joe to feedback Star Spangled Banner.
