keeping on open mind.....

I just post this on another thread:

"I have to admit that there are a few that I do not really dig but, IMHO...I can and have learned something from everyone....I say just listen, it really can not hurt your playing to always bring respect and humilty with you...once again, just my thoughts"

do you think this is true or have the new age people invaded my mind?

I voted "ture."

I learn something new everyday.

Even from people I may not necessarily like all that much.

Yes, I voted true. It is true, you can learn something new everyday.
But, you can also learn of bunch of shit from "some" new & old artists.
pick and choose, it's a free country. And, opinions are just that, opinions.

I agree. I can appreciate a band or musician but not care for their music.
By the way, let's see the full size picture in your sig.

Mostly true... also depends on what your definition of 'musician' is...

I used to hate country until a player I really respected that I used to work at a recording studio with told me that country stations where where you would here some of the hottest guitar playing today. Since I respected him as a player I started listening. I'm not a huge fan in general, but I have my favorites. There are really some smokin country players. I also confess a love for a lot of classical stuff...not all, but I try to keep an open mind. Listen to Samual Barber's Adagio for Strings. If that don't move your soul nothin will.

I voted "new age people have invaded your mind", not because I don't agree with your premise, but because there are some folks who just can't reach me.

Re: keeping on open mind.....

Seriously, though, I'd vote "true" based only on the poll questions, but I read the verbiage too, which means I'd have to be able to learn anything from everything, and sorry, I just can't say that. There's some stuff I just can't even listen to, much less learn from.

Re: keeping on open mind.....

Sure, I like a wide range of music. A lot of it really does have to appeal to me in some way though, even in the beginning. I'll listen to anything once, but if it just sounds terrible to me I probably won't purposely torture myself again. I think if you're looking to cultivate some fans for your music, you need to keep that in mind... some sort of pop sensibility, however minute, can go a long way.

If you're just completely and totally out there, you probably won't gain too many fans... without feeding them tons of mushrooms first.

Hip hop is not all gansta rap and there are some amazing artists who happen to fall into the rap/hip hop genre. Check out Michael Franti and Spearhead or The Fugis. Great grooves, etc. and, especially with Spearhead and a few other bands like that, lots of good guitar.

there really is a resonable debate underneath my mistaken polling question but, I do feel that a lot of times people will dismiss something that is clearly bad in one way before they have really listened...

for example...'N Sync, by any observation as what it is...a created, produced, (bad) pop boy band....but by listening to them I picked up some good midi/synth programing ideas

I could go on endlessly....sometimes it could be a small idea...for example...by listening to ranchro (just the pop stuff on the radio not the more cool stuff) I started to think more about 3/4 time and crazy over the top snare rolls.... originally I started listing to that stuff to be able to write a piece of music for an accordian and along they way I picked up some good ideas...

that is my argument....but, I tend to work in many areas of music (mostly due to carpel tunnel) insteed of just playing guitar....

Another one I'd add that sometimes falls into the Rap/HH genre is Roy Hardgove. Some SERIOUS grooves there baby.

Well the only cd I have that coes close to rap is The album Ice T made, bodycount.Public enemy and anthrax rocked.I just like to appreciate a band that plays instruments, what ever type of music it is,rather than just talks about how badass they are like someone like 50cent.
