+1 on Harrison................a song's best friend!
Leslie West......king of the 4 "Ts" of playing (Tone-touch-taste-timing).

Re: Underrated or Ignored Musicians from before 1987

I'll add these guys to the list of "overlooked guitar players"...

Billy Jones - great guitarist (Hughie Thomasson is better known but Billy was a killer
player - heck I'll even add Hughie to the list!)

George McCorkle - another great player (usually played rhythm but could do some nice leads
as well) just like Billy to Hughie, George was often over shadowed by Toy Caldwell (another
great player - never used a pick - Charlie Daniels said that Toy had the "fastest thumb" he'd
ever seen)

John Fogerty (CCR)

Greg Martin (Kentucky Headhunters)

Dave and Rod from Foghat

Duane Roland (Molly Hatchet - Dreams I'll Never See solo, etc.)

Jerry Reed (way more than "Smokey & The Bandit" )

Vince Gill (super great singer and a monster on a Telecaster)

David Gilmour is so underrated that it's almost criminal.

I'll also add Mark Hitt from Rat Race Choir.

I started playing clubs in 1980 and have been pretty much ignored since.

I'll also add Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Eric Gale, and some of the studio guitarist that Steely Dan used... of course, Larry Carlton is well known but the other guys aren't so well known.

I am with you an all that you posted but Jerry Reed is my secret weapon when I need to steal licks from. I am huge Jerry fanatic!

Also a huge George Benson fan. Steve Miller as well. Jerry Garcia. Also Tommy Castro. You know as for some cool great southern rock type licks but with a modern hard rock vibe, Pepper Keenan and Woodroe from COC. Last but not least, David Grissom is one of the most un-real guitar player that I would just love sit down and play backing for. It would be a dream come true for me. I am a huge Grissom fan.

edit.... How can I forget, Michael Schenker! If you don't know who he is. Get off the computor NOW and get Strangers in The Dark. Learn every song note for note enjoy the rest of your life! The extended version on CD is freaking fantastic!

+100 on the "Skunk" & Eric Gale! I was fortunate to meet and see Skunk jam with the Doobies at a rehearsal when I was a lad. Pat Simmons was also a great guitar player as well. My mother dated a Doobie back in the day. I can't say who though....

Forgot to mention Dan Toler. Back in the day he was like a supercharged version of Dickey Betts.

Frank Marino was a badass, too!

That's a cool brush with fame ("my mom dated a Doobie" ). Very cool about seeing Baxter playing with 'em. My only Doobie Brothers story is that I once sold a patch bay to Chet McCracken, former Doobie Brothers drummer.

As for your comments on Jerry Reed... yep, he's a monster on the guitar. But I have to say that I wish he'd stick more to the guitar and less to the "comedian" routine in concert (actually not sure he even tours anymore... I'm sure he's made enough $$ to never have to work again). I saw him back in the mid 80's and he did more talking than playing (was funny but I wanted to hear him unleash "The Claw" - you know what I mean )

What about John Sykes? Also I agree with Gary Moore being underrated. Also, I'd like to mention Steve Lukather as well.

YouTube - ROCK AND ROLL HEAVEN RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS MIKE

Righteous Brothers,

Chorus:
If you believe in forever,
Then life is just a one-night stand.
If there's a rock and roll heaven,
Well you know they've got a hell of a band, band, band.
Jimmy gave us rainbows,
And Janis took a piece of our hearts,
And Otis brought us all to the dock of a bay.
Sing a song to light my fire,
Remember Jim that way,
They've all found another place, another place to play.
Chorus
Remember bad bad Leroy Brown,
Hey Jimmy touched us with that song.
Time won't change a friend we came to know.
And Bobby gave us Mack the Knife,
Well look out, he's back in town.
They'll all be there together
When they meet in one big show.
Chorus
There's a spotlight waiting
No matter who you are
Cuz everybody's got a song to sing,
Everyone's a star
(Everybody's got to be a star).
Chorus, repeat and fade out
