Re: Mick Ronson

Ronson was cool, in a Paul Kossoff sort of way. I loved his work with Ian Hunter.

I'm with ya on that one, my friend.

Mick is always in my top guitarists. Love watching him play in the Ziggy movie.

Truly GREAT! Possibly the most unrated guitarist of all time.Slaughter on 10th Avenue is just one of those "perfect records".I wasn't too crazy about "Play Don't Worry".However the reissue has some great bonus tracks!
I worshiped him when I was a kid.One of the best shows I ever saw was Mick Ronson & Ian Hunter at the Roxy in L.A. Steve Jones opened.Axle & Slash sat in for White Light /White Heat and few others.Slash was just embarrassingly BAD.Long story, but he couldn't play WL/WH to save his life! Mick was in his face trying his best show him ....ALL THREE CHORDS!!! I've rarely seen such terrible playing.I'm so glad he's cleaned up his act since.Anyway,I was only 15 ,but got in with my brother's ID.So having MICK RONSON playing some screaming slide in your face using a bic lighter, was pretty F'n cool.
When we lost Mick we really did loose something special. To bad more never caught on.But from what I understand ,he was always pretty happy with that.
Sorry 'bout the rant. Thanks for bring me back to that though. Haven't though of that for a while!

Let's forget Diamond Dogs and a few other things where David Bowie was the only guitarist. He's an excellent player in his own right! I like his playing way more than Reeves Gabrels.I keep hoping he'll do one last really nice intimate record like Hunky Dory.Something without all the sampling garbage & jungle beats.Just losts of organic tones in a nice room....One can only dream.................

Re: Mick Ronson

Ronson appeared on the 1972 country-rock album Bustin' Out by Pure Prairie League, (Amy, what you gonna do?) where he did the string ensemble arrangements and contributed guitar and vocals on several tracks.

Aha! It all makes more sense now! Hence, Angel #9 ?? I was just trying to play that last night. But I got a little hung up a a few chords. It seems like every verse is different.Do any of you guys know what the chord progression to that? I've got the main lick down, but it's the rest........

Re: Mick Ronson

I finally got a chance to chime in! Ronno's the reason I started exploring lead guitar back in the 70s. His phrasing still knocks me out. There are lots of technically better guitarists out there, but the emotion that can be heard through his playing is what does it for me. You can hear him wringing that LP Custom's neck for all it's worth. And his TONE!

He did all the arrangements for Bowie's "Hunky Dory" & "Ziggy". Not to mention producing Morrisey's "Your Arsenal". I had read somewhere that he reportedly helped produce John Mellencamp's "American Fool" lp & played the acoustic on "Jack & Diane": "I owe Mick Ronson the song... Mick was very instrumental in helping me arrange that." - J.M.

There's the original version of Elton John's "Madman Across The Water" with Ronno throwing down some heavy guitar throughout the song. Simply awesome.

Thank you for this thread.

Re: Mick Ronson

I was just riding in the car the other day with my sons and put Mott the Hoople "One of the Boys" on. I love that song and my sons were digging it too. I always figured that Ronson played most of the great guitar on there, but I know Mick Ralphs played with Mott the Hoople as well. Anyone know?

Re: Mick Ronson

Ralphs left Mott in '73. That's him on "One Of The Boys" (he co-wrote it).

His tone on that song is amazing. Much better then his later stuff with Badco in my opinion.

Ronson is one of my favourites.
Les Paul, 200W Marshall amp, and a wah pedal. The rest was all Mick.

Re: Mick Ronson

My favourite LP player bar none.

His vibrato was perfect, his tone was spot on and from his Biog (Spider with the platinum hair) he was an absolutely top bloke.

From Hull near me too - a fellow Yorkshireman

Re: Mick Ronson

I have heard, that his famous LP (the one with sanded top in the above pictures) is on display (broken) in some bar in Australia.

Can anybody confirm?

Rumour has it that he had some sort of steel plate put into one of the body cavities of that guitar that contributed to his sound. It would be most interesting to be able to find out.

This could be her most recent whereabouts:
Gibson 1968 LP Custom Mick Ronson's Les Paul Custom | Museum | Guitar Hangar

I have no idea if these (100) are still available:
Mick Ronson Tribute Gibson Les Paul | Gibson | Electric Guitars | Guitar Hangar

Re: Mick Ronson

Hi Guy's, Totally agree. A superb player who was so under rated in his life time. More and more are appreciating him now that he's gone.

Have a look at The Official Mick Ronson website for more info. The discussion board is a good source of info for chords and the like and the Ronno's Les Paul.

PS - I bought a Ronson tribute Les Paul from Guitar Hangar in 2004. What a superb guitar she is too.
