Re: Mick Ronson

Hi all,
I still relish listening to Moonage Daydream. That was my introduction to the "electric guitar solo" back when I was a wee 5th grader. Great playing that got me to pick up a guitar in the first place. Requieset in pace Mick. Stupid cancer and mortality in general.

Re: Mick Ronson

VH1-C ran the 1973 Bowie "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars" concert at the London Odeon last night. Classic Ronno.

Anybody watch it?

Re: Mick Ronson

its no secret that Ronson was a huge influence on Randy Rhoads. Randy's look and the white Les Paul were Mick Ronson influenced.

Re: Mick Ronson

Agree with all comments - he was a great player. His vibrato was top shelf.

I have two Ronno stories...

I grew up in Philly, and was lucky enough to see the Spiders during their stand at the Tower Theater. The day after the show, I was walking through Center City, minding my own, when I walked around a corner and nearly walked right into - The spiders, minus David. Seems they had gotten lost walking around and couldn't find their way back to their hotel. The funny thing was, they were like a block and a half away from the hotel, which I walked them back to.

I asked Ronson where Bowie was, and he told me that their manager (at the time, Tony DeVries of MainMan) never let Bowie out of the hotel in order to create more of a mystery about him.

Story 2:

In the early Nineties, my old band was signed to Giant Records for a time, and we recorded at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, NY. The chief engineer at the studio became friends with Ronson (who lived in Saugerties, I think), and they were keeping Ronno's gear at the studio for him.

I was lucky enough to play a few guitar tracks through Ronson's Fender Twin, which sounded pretty sweet.

I did. Even though I have it on DVD. Wife watched it with me; the move where Ronno lifts his leg up at the end of "Space Oddity" was a move I used to do to end a song. My wife said "So that's where you got that move". BTW Ronno's 2nd solo on "S.O." is simply magnificent. It just soars over that chord progression!

Re: Mick Ronson

One of my students recently showed up with a guitar mag asking me to help him with suffragette city. Ended up being one of best jam sessions I'd ever had with one of my students. Ronson just rocks!!! Awesome tone, great riffs, great peformer, and a huge influence on Randy Rhoads.
