Re: Ernie Isley
...and what a vocalist Ronnie was! A truly talented band that started recording in the fifties!! Great 60's hits followed by super, ubercool music in the 70's. And yes, in amongst it all was a virtuoso guitar player in Ernie, who occasionally was unleashed and boy, did he take advantage!

Re: Ernie Isley
Now, back on track. "S-O-S" was an example of how to make an album in the 70's. R&B/Soul/Motown/Bluesy....I could go on but it's my fave Isley's vinyl.

Re: Ernie Isley
This is a little thing I wrote last April.
When the elder Isley Brothers were looking to fill the guitar slot once previously held by Jimi Hendrix, they had no further to look than across the dining room table. Now Ernie Isley might not be a household name like Clapton, Hendrix, or Page, but he’s in our homes every day lately thanks to the TV commercials featuring “Who’s That Lady”. A little man with a huge tone, he’s gotten to walk in Jimi’s shoes, and come to be an icon in his own right. Even though in the Nineties was sometimes seen brandishing a custom Yamaha Pacifica, Ernie’s connection to the Fender Strat is as just as strong as Eric’s, or, well Jimi’s. His 2000 pound bumblebee tone could be described as big, swirly & LUSH. Electro Harmonix effects like the Big Muff Pi and Electric Mistress were staples in Ernie’s rig, as well as the Octavia, made by Jimi’s guitar effects guru Roger Mayer, with whom Ernie also had a close bond with. The Univibe was also featured prominently in songs like Climbing Up the Ladder, and Voyage To Atlantis (which should be required listening for every guitarist). Ernie usually ran all this through Silver faced Fender Dual Showman Amplifiers creating an immediately unmistakable tone. A master at using these sonic tools, he made up for not being the fastest guy on the block with taste, soul, and a meticulous sound. What a lot of people don’t realize is that Ernie played drums (and bass) on most of these classic songs. While I couldn’t seem to find out for sure, I would assume that he played Rogers Drums, since they were owned at that time by CBS, who also owned Fender, the Isley’s endorser in the Seventies. Acquiring their own studio gave him the freedom to create multitrack danceable soul – rock masterpieces. He & his older brothers have enjoyed an enviable string of hits on their own T-Neck label. In the eighties Ernie released a solo album titled High Wire, where he played almost all the instruments, with a little help from American Idol’s Randy Jackson. High Wire is an album that should be listened to, if you can find it. Ernie’s going out on this year’s Experience Hendrix tour with Eric Johnson and others, so we’ll get a chance to see him again doing what he does best – playing the “you know what” out of his guitar. Re: Ernie Isley
Amazingly underrated talent, but I guess thats what happens when you play in a R&B band. I also happen to feel the same way in regards to Ron Isley and being a Frontman.

Re: Ernie Isley
Another no special reason, just because bump. Sorry about the Muses & Rising videos having been taken down. Voyage is enough though with everyone else's contributions.
Man, when the Leslie slows down on that first sustained note on Voyage, pure sonic bliss! |
