'Tis a well know fact. However, I doubt Ric Ocasek would have let that happen. He produced some of the best guitar-heavy albums of the '90s.

I did a show where we covered Cars (I was on keys) and I'm still embarrassed.

Re: Guitars almost Died in Popular music in the 80's

I don't know how common this knowledge is, but awhile back I remember reading somewhere around here that had Randy Rhoads not died, he planned on departing from Ozzy's lineup fairly soon to pursue more keyboard-oriented music, among other things. I wonder how much that would have changed people's opinions of such a widely recognized guitar legend?

I hate to be the voice of dissent (again), but I feel the 80's were an EXCELLENT decade for guitar.

Re: Guitars almost Died in Popular music in the 80's

of course you picked the WORST example! Come on. For the times, Dokken, Motley Crue and others were writing solid hard rock/metal songs. I think the guitar popped like a color tattoo in the 80's, compared to the death blow of disco in the late 70's.

Quiet Riot & Def lepperd brought metal to Mtv.

80's ruled!!!!
HORRIBLE video, GREAT song!!
Talkbox!!!!
A great decade for music. The 90's ended the "learn your instrument" decade and ushered in "3 chord rock, do drugs and play out of tune".

Re: Guitars almost Died in Popular music in the 80's

True, plenty of guitar in the bee gees stuff, abba and others. No doubt. HOWEVER, theres no denying guitar playing took a healthy dose of steroids in the 80's from the 70's, but then fell off a cliff for a good part of the 90's. What came back a bit in the 90's was TONE, but ability became uncool, sadly.

Re: Guitars almost Died in Popular music in the 80's

I conside the 80s as the having the responsibility for creating the birth of the guitar god. Various playerrs got their start at varous times during the 80s, but many guitarists go their rise during that same time periond: Yngwie Malmsteen; Satch; Vai, Eric Johnson, Carlos Covaso, Randy Rhodes, Warren DiMartinni; EVH, George Lynche; maybe even Ace Frehley. And there was a host of others. I think it's quite possible the 80s gave us the most talented guitar player of all time.

It fell off the cliff in mid 1980 thru about late 84 keyboards over powered and drum machines

A few of these guys were actually 70's guys that didnt become relevant until the 80's. Malmsteen, Rhoads, Satch, EVH, lynch and definately Ace(its painful to mention him in this sentence) were all doing their thing in the mid to late 70's already.

I think technology had some catching up to do as well to give guitar players the rackmount gear that shredders gravitated towards. All those then boutique amp makers like Randall and Soldano were non existent until the mid 80s as well. Sounds got arguable more polished as the decade marched on.

Yes, I know. That's why I eluded to that in my post. If you want to get technical, you could say that most 80s guitarists belonged to the 70s because thats when they started making noise in the music industry.

But as far as popular 80s guitarists go, arguably, one might say the 80s produced the most and highest quality players of all time.

Re: Guitars almost Died in Popular music in the 80's

Let me put on my Members Only jacket and remember the guitar albums I loved in the '80s (still do):

The Cars
R.E.M.
U2
The Police
Husker Du
Van Halen
The Pixies
Prince
Rush
Tears for Fears
Duran Duran
The Cure
Sting
Dire Straights
XTC
Mr. Mister
GNR
Talking Heads
The Clash
The Church
Genesis
Journey
Violent Femmes
Peter Gabriel

Yeah, I love a lot of different kinds of music, but all those bands had big hits in the '80s and all featured a LOT of guitar. Excellent guitar.

Re: Guitars almost Died in Popular music in the 80's

I was glad to see the Church on that list. They had great guitar tones. REM from a similar genre, albeit more stripped-down. Husker Du was a terribly underrated band; not much great playing, but huge heart. Golden Earring had a small comeback. Judas Priest hit their stride, as did Maiden.

Now, you can say "Oh, but they were 70s acts", but that's really a No True Scotsman fallacy. They hit their prime in the 80s, and their prime was damned good.

Hey, how come no one has mentioned Metallica, Megadeth, or Anthrax?

Also, if you wish to argue on that logic, you must then give the 80s Soundgarden, Pearl Jam , AiC, and so on. They all got their start in the late 80s.

No, the 80s were good for guitar. Better than this last decade.
