Re: TOOL Appreciation Thread
Happy Sunday everyone...hope everyone has a happy, relaxing, and safe one
. Here's H. Good sound quality. Who knows what Tool songs are about, but I always assumed this one was about heroin. But, I read somewhere someone else's interpretation, and it made more sense. Maybe this song is about Maynard's new born son at the time."What's being held up is a mirror..." "My blood before me..." Here's a link to a thread with some good thoughts on the meaning of the lyrics, etc. An interesting tidbit is the middle name of Maynard's son is H. Not short for anything...just H. Don't know if it's true, but if it is, it's cool. The Meaning of H. Spoken by Maynard himself [Archive] - The Tool Page: Opinion Whatever it's about, it's always been an all time favorite of mine. J

Re: TOOL Appreciation Thread
Wow, you guys still have this thread going, too f'ing cool...
I was surfing the YT vids related to these guys a few years back, and came across this set of vids of Tool songs interpreted on the Piano. Like I always have said, a really good song will sound good, on just about any instrument. I think these vids show the quality of Tool songwriting is top notch... ( apologies if they have already been posted)

Re: TOOL Appreciation Thread
Finished "Right In Two". Using a new camera, a ZOOM Q3HD. I think it does a better job of not coloring the sound and the video is available in HD.
Lately I've been trying to capture Adam's live tone, so my sound may not match the studio track exactly...especially in the beginning. I know I'm unlikely to to get a perfect match to Adam's live sound without amps cranked to 10 and an arena for natural reverb. But It's getting closer and I like the sound. But I think some people are looking for a close studio track match and may be turned off by the sound...which is kind of a mix between the two. Will you guys let me know honestly what you think. Constructive criticism is appreciated and I won't take offense. J

Re: TOOL Appreciation Thread
Maynard and Adam have said in interviews, numerous times, they do not like the idea of a live dvd, and anything other than their videos has been "a bad experience". I fully expect them to never release a live dvd, I bet the only way it may happen, is years from now, when they stop touring and need $$. Besides, there are very few "official" live concert cds/or dvds that -IMO- surpass some of the top notch audience audio recordings..they just usually cannot capture an accurate reproduction of the live sound and ambiance. (not to mention how many "live" dvds/cds are 100% un-altered or not tweaked in the studio..? not many, if any. And in that case I'd rather do without.)

![]() If you're looking for constructive critisism the only thing I can think of is in the intro. I think the slides need to finish as strong as they start if you know what I mean. Although, you may have done it perfectly and it just didn't come through in the audio. I know setting the delay has a lot to do with it since the slides need to end sort of abruptly and the echo fills it out. Seriously though, it sounded great. I love that song. |

I love the way Adam plays the songs live...the tone, the changes, everything. I've noticed that since 10,000 Days came out in 2006 or so, live footage taken near that time shows the song played pretty close to the studio track. But then later footage from the last mini-tour shows the technique and sound are a bit different. I figure it's like a canvas that never gets finished; if the artist has to give it up at a certain date, it is what it is...but if he's allowed to continually tweak it, the latest version is what he would have come up with if he had the time in the first place. So, I'm always looking for the latest footage of a song played live to see what Adam has done with it. You can see the same phenomenon with Stinkfist. Pretty close to the studio track in the early '90's...now look at the song. After living with it and playing it so much for so long, it's evolved into something really, really, cool IMO. I'll bet that Adam would record the song as it is now if he could go back in time...he wouldn't play it the way he plays it now if he thought that it was finished when he recorded it, in other words. The songs are always evolving. That being said, some of the latest footage of Right In Two, I hear the beginning as slightly palm-muted, with the notes very abrupt. Sounded way cool to my ear. If I roll back the volume a bit more and play without the slight palm mute, I can clean up the sound and bring in more treble by playing closer to the bridge. Both versions sound cool, but that's the way I played it when I recorded. As for the slides you're right...I could have given that some more attention. And the bit of delay I was using isn't always obvious. Probably should have turned the delay up for the recording...even though it would sound like too much in person. I guess I kind of wish I would have played it more closely to the studio version as that's what people are going to be comparing it to. All of these thoughts/reasons are not going to come through in any description of the song or the comments, etc. However, people should realize that if I can play it one way, I can play it another...anybody can play anything with a bit of practice first. If I listen to what I recorded on it's own merit, I like it. If I listen to it with an ear for the studio track, I feel weird about it. Guess in the grand scheme of things, it's just a Youtube cover and it doesn't matter...but it's important to me to have the best covers that I can do up there. Check this video out and listen to the technique/tone at around 1:03. I hear a slight palm mute and the notes are very distinct/abrupt...Adams heavy pick hand on a palm muted string .Edit: Actually, listening to the beginning in this video over and over a few times...I hear Adam being progressive about it . Starts off palm-muted and abrupt and finishes the beginning riff with no palm-mutes and a clearer tone. The guy isn't called a Prog master for nothing...and he is "mister subtle". I'll be, just as with the albums...if you listen to live footage over and over again, you can always come up with something new you didn't detect. I really appreciate Tool, lol .Sorry for the wall of text... J

Re: TOOL Appreciation Thread
Great job, again, J!! Awesome stuff. I wouldn't concern my self with how people "expect" to hear the song. Play it the way YOU want to hear it.
This has nothing to do with Sludge's comments by the way. That's good, constructive criticism is ya ask me. I agree with the songs evolving. I think this happens with many artists. I've heard bands mention things like "we've learned more about our songs and how they should be played" on more than one occasion. We're always evolving so it just makes sense. Keep up the good work man!! |

I, for one, would not "rather do without". I have many live dvds and they all do what they're supposed to. Audio quality on any of my newer (post 2000) dvds I own has been top notch so I wouldn't worry there. My Rage Against the Machine dvds are a good example. The first "official" concert they released was edited like crazy. Silly Adobe Premier crap effects and even to the point where there were footage from different shows blended in one song. However the audio was excellent and seamless. Ideal for a concert dvd? Maybe not, but I'll DEFINITELY take it. Especially when it comes to Tool. Plus Tool is so anal that you have to expect that if and when they release something like this it will be stellar. Time will tell my friend.

Re: TOOL Appreciation Thread
Mornin' all. Happy m f'n Saturday!!! Lol. Sorry, I'm in a mood
. Ok, here's a vid. Doing Vicarious next. This song is like Sober. Everyone likes it. There's a million covers of it up already, so I'm not too thrilled about doing it. But, in my effort to cover every Tool song, up it goes...in a few weeks. Anyway...J

On another note...I finally decided to try some different strings. Been using 10's for the last couple of years. On a whim, ordered some 11's to try out. Big difference...I wouldn't have thought. Much easier to get more bass and weed out a lot of the unintentional harmonics when trying to play dead notes, etc. Feedback also sounds more in "tone". Upon a little research, seems Adam may have mentioned these strings before... ![]() Think I'll try them next. Would make sense. Adam said in one video that his Gibson was about control..."control of the highs, the lows, the mids". Something like that. Would make sense that he would use a set of strings that made the bass heavier and treble brighter. However, I am digging the 11's. J
