Re: Jonesyblues Custom Shop & ToneMojo.com

You can play it like that for a while with the 50's set up, and then if you want you can change cap from center lug of vol to pickup lug on vol. and that will give you more modern wiring. You will also have the volume bleed kits that are included to tinker with as well

Re: Jonesyblues Custom Shop & ToneMojo.com

I'll just leave it as 50's style wiring. I have that in my other Sg and it's just great. Also how do you instal the Vol bleed kits, and can you explain what they do? I forgot... Whoops.

Yeah I include a little drawing, pretty simple mod they just solder across the two hot lugs on vol pots. Normally when you turn your volume down your highs start to drop out. The bleed kits keep tone crisp at any volume level.

Perfecto. I was wondering, since my soldering iron sucks, can you just throw them on for me? Is it an addition charge?

No extra charge, I can install the bleed kits when I build your rig if you don't like the soldering iron I try to encourage people to do some of there own mods though...

Well if I had a 40 watt iron it would be another story. Check out this modding I did before though.

Looks like 50's wiring with some heavy duty solid core electrical wire, and those HYREL Caps look familiar, I only use 30 watt Weller pencil style soldering iron for all my work and it gets the job done fine. To much heat on the Pots can mess them up....

That copper wire was horrible work with though. Although it has virtually no resistance, compared to the wire in their before. I got those caps from Martinsixstrings. He was having a sale so I snagged 4 for 10 bucks

Yeah that must be 12 or 14 g house wire...good for 220v,,,he,he better than that tiny wire for sure. I use the 22g solid core vintage cloth wire on most of my harnesses, it is pretty easy to work with. Pics are of some of the Relic'd 22g

Must be easy to work with if it bends That stuff I used was so bad. I wired it to the input jack for the LP, pushed the jack into place and prayed the solder didn't crack. Thank god it didn't.

Well I noticed out of the 10, K40's I got some were marked 10% and some were marked 20% tolerance so it varied a bit between those kinds, but not much overall from cap to cap. The 20 of the K42's in green case were all very close and were all spec'd 10%

I just installed one of the these Russian K40Y-9 PIO Caps in the bridge of my 99' Gibson LP Special and it is a most excellent sounding cap. Warm, crisp tone without the harsh bite. I have cap wired in 50's style...Sprague HYREL .022 w/vol.bleed kit in neck, both caps have very similar audio properties.
Interesting, I've never seen K40Y-9s marked with a 20% variance, just 10%. I agree with you 100% percent on your description of the sound as warm and crisp. I think you will sell many of these caps. A very good deal.

Re: Jonesyblues Custom Shop & ToneMojo.com

Hi I am interested in making this modification to my epi les paul, I play a mix of hard bluesy rock, punk, and high gain metal

what would you recommend for a nice bluesy classic tone that can still crunch when hit with a whole lot of overdrive?

also..my friend is curious on a classic jimmy page wiring harness, what kind of caps would you use for those?

i am an amateur when it comes to the soldering, but I am more than willing, is it just as simple as a lug on the volume and a lug on the tone?

sorry for rambling lol

THANKS!

Greetings, good questions. #1 solder tip heat the metal and not the solder, don't use excess heat or you can damage, warp pots and caps etc...

Any of my .022 PIO caps would open up your tone, for rock, blues or metal even country or jazz for that matter. Good caps are warmer and more expressive for all kinds of music. These caps help out a lot especially if you still have original epi pu's.

The Jimmy Page rigs have been getting the Spague .022 HYREL PIO for this past year. Bleed kits are optional...

Note: Your pickups need to have 4 wires for the Jimmy Page Wiring to work. epi's stock pu's usually just have the 2 wires, so you nee to upgrade to some Shep's handwounds or a pair of Gibson or Dimarzio pu's with 4 wires.

hey thanks for taking the time for a killer response...I'm pretty sure my buddys is stock but I'll check on it...mine is a different animal, i have a stock (im pretty sure) bridge pup but a second aftermarket bridge pup in the next position (the guitar is used, and was set up this way...but it sounds good so i havnt messed with it yet), but i'm thinking about buying some hotter pickups for myself for xmas lol

safe to assume the 22's will work with either application?...

thanks again

Wink Re: Jonesyblues Custom Shop & ToneMojo.com

yeah .022's have been Gibson spec for 50 years they work good all around, some guys here at MLPF have been running an .015 on the neck for a little more room on the dials, and .022 on bridge. The Russian .022's in green case are actually reading around .018, they would be great on neck.

I have a pair of those Green K42's in my 99' LP, Stock Gibson pu's 490R 498T??...neck pu reads about 8.3K and bridge pu is hot like 13.95K, for testing the wiring was converted back to 50's wiring. I am running vol. bleed kit on neck but not on bridge(installed after testing), both tone pots are 500K CTS, Rocking wide open crisp Tone when dimed, warmer and thicker as I roll off tone, but still plenty of upper mids & highs. Rolled way back theK42's get a great woman tone, I look for the "wha" spot somewhere towards the end of the curve but not all the way. IMO the .022 K42's (.018) have a more noticeable mid/upper mid curve, tight lows...
