I got a few of the Russian Military Caps in, .022 PIO K40Y-9 silver metal case,glass sealed ends. There are 20 of the K42 series in green case(like gipiphone said) on the way, they may be here this weekend? PM if you are interested...Thanks, jonesy

I just installed one of the these Russian K40Y-9 PIO Caps in the bridge of my 99' Gibson LP Special and it is a most excellent sounding cap. Warm, crisp tone without the harsh bite. I have cap wired in 50's style...Sprague HYREL .022 w/vol.bleed kit in neck, both caps have very similar audio properties.

Just Got these in the mail today from the Motherland, these are K42Y-2 Paper in Oil 10% Mil Spec Audio caps. .022 M 630V and they are constructed with layers on aluminum foil and paper core impregnated with Oil. I had to cut one open to be sure that I was selling was really PIO and they are. I have cut open all kinds of old caps to see/compare how they were made. The inside of these Russian K-series caps looks just like how the Sprague Vitamin Q's and 1950 Bees were made.



These Green K42's are slightly smaller than the silver K40's but the K42's are rated for 630V. I will be installing one in the bridge of my 99' LP and will post the results later tonight.

Well I spent quite a bit of time tinkering with these Russian caps today and here is what I found out. The green caps are the K42's and are slightly smaller and rated at 630V. The Sprague HYREL and Q's are only 200V or even 100VDC.
I went back and tested the K42's again and used the 200n scale on my meter and they read 17.6 n or .0176 u or micro farads.

This seemed kind of low compared to the .022 HYRELS which read 19.8 or .0198 or .020 u

This got me thinking about the 630V rating, high heat so the Oil must be a bit thicker. So I heated one of the K42's up with a lighter, and it read 18.6 n or .0186-.019 u and were closer to spec when running hot.
Bottom line these Russian K42's read in between an .015 and an .022 clocking in at closer to .017-.018, that gives them a nice color IMO

After I installed on of the K42's .017-ish Caps in the bridge of my 99' LP Special I liked it so much decided to convert neck wiring from what you may call the "black rose" wiring, back to Gibson 50's and install some Russian-Mojo in the neck as well

Above pic, Old HYREL pulled out and the K42 on deck reday to go in. K40 Far right, they sound great and are closer to the HYREL caps in Tone and actual read out.

I always pull they volume bleed kits when I am testing caps,(re-install later) lower pic is K42 in neck, 50's wiring set-up.

I like the Tonal-Color of these caps, the oil is a bit heavier and the metal case is really thick as well. Just the right size to fit in any guitar, and a nice fit in between .015 and .022. as they are probably closer to .017-.018
A few sets of these Russian caps are already spoken for, but if anyone else would like to try them PM me and I would be glad to hook you up.

Tone Note: I feel most good quality PIO caps will provide you with good Tone when installed correctly. They all have slightly different tonal characteristics.. When rolled off I found that these Green cased K42 caps had a nice warm Tone with plenty off useful range that fit somewhere in the .015 & .022 caps. In my search for PIO caps I am happy to find these Russian caps and will try and get some more in for next year. This is basically what I use for 50's wiring as far as the way lugs are soldered back to case and the way the caps go to lugs on vol. and tone pots...also look at the ground loop and the way that the 3 pos. toggle switch is wired up.
