Johnny Winter is not Alive and Well.

I saw him Friday night in a small club in Auburn Hills, Mi. and I think the club should be ashamed of themselves for charging 50 bucks to see this tragedy. Johnny had no guitar skills anymore. You would be shocked.

I was one of those wishful thinkers hoping for the best for Johnny. Rumors of his health improving and his skills returning are greatly exaggerated.

It's a shame really... For as popular as he was in the 70's, he goes mostly unrecognized.

Re: Johnny Winter is not Alive and Well.

His former manager F-ed him over, big time.

Quote:
During the 1980's, Johnny made a string of very strong albums for Alligator Records, including the excellent, Grammy nominated “Serious Business”. But for the past twenty or so years, rumors of a debilitating drug habit fed by a manager who seemed bent on controlling Johnny while keeping his financial affairs in the dark ran rampant in the music industry. Said Rick Derringer in 2001 of Winter's longtime manager Teddy Slatus “I don't want to see Johnny dying…I don't want to see Johnny being cheated. I want to see Johnny getting everything he's earned, and I have a suspicion that Teddy wants just the opposite.”

Earlier this year, tensions came to a head which resulted in Johnny's firing of Slatus after over thirty years of management. Shortly after the termination, Slatus passed away after a fall down a flight of stairs.

I for one am very grateful for the body of work he has done in his lifetime, if he never hits another lick (knock on wood), he is definitely in the top 10 guitar slingers.

I saw him play @ Mulchays in Wantagh - the only thing he could still do well was play slide guitar. He has no finger strength whatsoever. They basically carried the old bugger on stage. He'll die with that firebird in his hand.

Re: Johnny Winter is not Alive and Well.

Johnny had a fall several years back and broke his hip which led to a downward spiral period in his health. He also had some other health-related issues. Also, given the fact that he was into heroin for so long and drank for so many years, on top of the fact he's an albino, he's been rode hard and put up wet. However, his health has improved considerably in the past few years and he's doing much better. He plays sitting down now on account of the hip.

I saw him a couple of years back. He played pretty well given the circumstances. I was honored just to get a chance to see him for myself.

I saw him at The Downtown a few years ago. He had some good moments, but yeah, it seems like he should've retired a while ago. He's pretty frail, and he can't see.

Re: Johnny Winter is not Alive and Well.

You got to see a real Rock Star, he really shook up the music industry when he came in. His health problems are well known, he's diabetic. And he needs to make a living. If nothing else as a fellow musician, you helped a fellow musician. I don't think Johnny will be with us for a long time. So you make look back on this differently, in years to come.

Re: Johnny Winter is not Alive and Well.

Johnny is the main reason I purchased a Firebird.
I've seen him at least 5 times since the mid 80's.
I saw him a year ago May and he is in bad shape.
Yes. He had to be helped to the stage and sat down in a chair.
Yes. He played mainly slide on his beat up Bird.
But he did rock. Still some fire left in them old claw like hands.
It is truely sad to see the heros of our youth, Our main infulences grow old and feable.
It' s the natural cycle of life. Sad, but true. It just reminds us of our own mortality.

I went with the sole purpose of getting an autograph. There was no way he was going to be able to sign anything though. I love Johnny and always will.

Listen to some old Johnny Winter, then listen to SRV, you can't tell me Stevie Ray didn't pick up 90% of his licks from Winter... not including the other percentage from Albert King. Don't get me wrong SRV still SMOKED but I think Johnny really defined his style.

The man is 66 yrs and been playing, partying and recording since he was 15 - 1/2 century is going to take its toll.

I got to see him on the same bill with Roy Buchannan and Ronnie Montrose in the early 80s - one of the best I've ever seen.

People were saying that here too and we were thinking "Are these people for real?. Just cause you want him to sound like the great Johnny Winter doesn't mean he sounds like him. It was depressing. I truly felt for him.

It's that Texas blues thing, but SRV picked up a lot of his style from Lonnie Mack as well. You have to include Lonnie Mack int he equation.

And it is sad about Johnny and his manager messing him up.
He is one of my favorite slide guitarists, and you can hear his influence in many guitarists

That's one of the reasons Tom left the band. Johnny was so high most of the time everything was sounding a mess at gigs and I wont repeat what he said about the manager...........

The better days..
