Yardwork Sucks!!!

Does anyone else here hate yardwork as much as I do. I have already mowed my grass 5 times and the season is just starting. It is the biggest waste of time. I could be winding or strumming the electric twanger instead.

I am thinking I should get a couple of goats and let them wonder around the yard....I'm sure my neighbors will love that

where i live in ireland, the grass grows so damn quick in the summer, if i want it looking perfect i have to mow it at the beginning and middle of the week. not a huge lawn, but a big pain in the ass.

I certainly don't look forward to it. Especially in 98F heat with like, 1,000% humidity!

This may sound funny, but I love mowing the lawn. The mower drowns out all other sound, and I can just relax and walk along with the mower. It is like meditation....with fresh cut grass smell!

Ya know, I don't mind shoveling snow or doing summer yardwork (mowing, trimming, planting, etc...) but I absolutely hate raking leaves.

Re: Yardwork Sucks!!!

Yah, raking leaves is a bitch.

I'm in Chicago...we get the extremes of all the seasons.

I hate moving the lawn.

I hate shoveling snow.

...yah, pretty much all yardwork sucks to me, so i'm with ya kevin.

Re: Yardwork Sucks!!!

Hmm... yeah, I rather enjoy activities that I can be in my own little world while doing.

Vacuuming. Mowing the lawn. Raking leaves. Shovelling snow. I'm with Scoob, it's relaxing - time to just be with yourself and not worry about stuff.

at least you don't get the humidity thrown in for free here... makes it a tad more bearable...

I totally agree... Nobody ever comes over to offer unwanted opinions on the best way to cut your yard when you are walking behind the mower. The drone from the engine blocks out distractions. Mowing is a mindless task that allows you to get a little exercise and clear your head at the same time. I've tried to explain the "Zen" of lawn mowing to my 21-yr old son, but he just can't grasp the concept. A good (herbally induced) buzz, a good lawnmower, and a warm spring afternoon can fix you right up.

(I need to get out more....)

Re: Yardwork Sucks!!!

Get creative and create a waterless yard. Lots of much, plants, shrubs, flowers and tress and NO GRASS. You can even sell it it as ecologically better for the planet. It looks after itself and only needs watering when it rains and never needs mowing.

Re: Yardwork Sucks!!!

What's the average yard size here? You "city folk" are pushing 1/2 acre plots at the most, right? Maybe an acre? I've got a 10 acre spread (1/2 clear, 1/2 wooded) here at the house. If you're going to get a riding mower, get a ZTR. It almost eliminates the need to own a weed-eater. At 6'3", I've never found a weed-eater that didn't require me to hunch over to use.

Almost love the mowing. Can't stand the trim work...

5 acres of grass is considerable to say the least! I'm allergic to grass but cutting grass is sort of fun and rewarding - with the right gear!

+1000 on the zero turn rider. I was seriously looking at them (commercial quality) to replace on old garden tractor and then my wife found out the price I was considering paying. She quickly found someone to cut the lawn! So anyway, these guys show up with 2 water cooled Scag Turf Tigers last Thursday - and I swear they cut the grass in less than 12 minutes flat. It was nothing short of amazing.

Now that my kids are grown, I hired somebody to do the yard work...worth every penny...I get to spend more time with the wifey (meaning I follow her around obediently like the dog I am).

Re: Yardwork Sucks!!!

Yardwork....well my name should say it all. I tangled with a lawn mower and lost a big toe.
It's ok though...it doesn't really affect my balance unless I drink.
Can't dance anymore...but never could anyway.
...And I can't count to twenty anymore unless I include a "Digit" that can't be mentioned here.
Ya'll be carefull this summer...don't let this happen to you!

I kinda get lazy in about the middle of the summer and stop mowing the lawn as often as I should. I don't really like the summer either. An average summer day is about 100F with 95% humidity. Boy, living right by the confluence is fun ...stupid humidity... grumble
