Sleep Apnea

People have told me for years that they can't share a room with
me.
I know I have sleep apnea, but this is taking a strange twist.

For about the last three weeks, at about 3 am my cat will awaken me,
purposely. Very gently she will place a paw on my upper arm,
sometimes I pretend I'm asleep. Then she uses a claw, just one.

Last night I left a voice activated tape recorder on the top of my headboard.
This morning I listened to a portion of the tape,
I swear Satan was in the room.

Because it's voice activated I cannot determine the timeline.
It's just one constant snore.

Tonight I'm going to let the tape run for 2 hours.

Now I have to look into the bare bones health insurance I have,
and see if I'm covered for an evaluation.

I wake refreshed, but I do tire easily late morning and mid afternoon.

I'll post tomorrow after I tape tonights seesion.

Re: Sleep Apnea

If you suspect you have Sleep Apnea get it checked out because it can be serious. I have really bad Obstructive Sleep Apnea and it's not something to mess with. BTW, Sleep Apnea is not constant snoring. You actually stop breathing while you sleep. You'll know you have it if you hear snoring, then nothing then a big GASP for air. That is Apnea.

Re: Sleep Apnea

Get a sleep study done, if you can. Go to an ENT and they can evaluate you and order a sleep study if necessary.

I have sleep apnea and had surgey for it. Cut out my tonsels, adnoids, and part of my soft palate. That was some of the worst pain ever!!!!

Re: Sleep Apnea

You should really get this checked out. A very good friend of mine died 2 years ago from sleep apnea. She literally suffocated in her sleep. She was a fantastic person, and one hella musician.
If your a Veteran, the VA does sleep studies for this type of affliction all the time, you could get checked in there, and they'll look out for ya.

Isn't sleep apnea a modern term for a fat bastard who snores a lot? cos that's what I am. At least after a few thousands of years they've given it a fancy name for the insurance forms

Obesity is just ONE of the possible causes for sleep apnea. Not every person with sleep apnea is obese, and not all obese people suffer from sleep apnea.

Still, if the OP is on the heavy side, and if his/her health insurance is as "bare bones" as suggested, losing weight is usually one of the first recommended "treatments" for apnea in overweight persons.

Re: Sleep Apnea

I have sleep apnea, but because of my head-cold I can't wear my mask... so I'm back to snoring and waking up more sleepy than I was when I went to bed.

I tried the machine, but it freaked me out. I opted for surgery and it seems to have worked, but if you can deal with the mask, more power to you!

Well, I need the surgery, but I don't have a week to take off for them to break and reset my nose, repair my septum, and cauterize my turbinates.

Some Universities have sleep studies, free or small charge maybe. Maybe worth looking into. Save some $$ and a full report.

Re: Sleep Apnea

I use a CPAP machine. Because of my background as an aircrew member in the Air Force I don't get that claustrophobic feeling when you put the mask on.

It sure works for me.

Right before I put it on, I tell the wiff that I'm going 'Darth Vader'...LOL

Yeah, that is the exact way I felt with the machine. I would try and calm down to go to sleep and if I woke up in the night, I would just freak out with the mask on my face. I tried for about a month, but just gave up. My aunt uses one, though, and says it has changed her life.

Try as I might, I can't wear the mask. I've tried them all to no avail. Oddly enough, this little contraption made a HUGE difference for me.

PureSleep Stop Snoring Solution

It's relatively inexpensive and I was surprised by the results!

Re: Sleep Apnea

The hard thing for most people is the concept of 'pressure breathing'...it reverses your normal pattern of actively inhaling/passively exhaling.

A lot of people find it uncomfortable, but I find it really relaxing.

Sometimes I just like to sit with the mask on and my mouth open and just let it circulate air.

Maybe I need to look into this too. My wife says she's scared to go to sleep sometimes because I stop breathing and she's afraid I'm not going to start back up again.

Definitely look in to it. Better safe than sorry. I take it seriously as I know first hand what the worst case scenario is. Unfortunately, my mother had it too and one evening a few years back, she went to sleep and never woke up. Complications due to sleep apnea.

LOL...

I've learned the scuba trick of keeping the valve in my throat closed, so when I open my mouth the air doesn't circulate any more.
