Social networking sites

So I almost broke down and registered for a popular social networking site today. I have been resisting doing this (it doesn't take much effort), though I'm not really sure why. I am a teacher, and having my students able to view my pictures and profile is not desirable. I figured I should ask the MLPF. MLPF what do ye think?

Re: Social networking sites

I'm on facebook...I hate it but you get to choose who can see your profile....I only signed up because somebody, a good friend, refused to email me photos of a vacation trip they went on...

Make your profile private. That way you can choose who can see it.

Re: Social networking sites

It's a total waste of time...

Social networking is like a bizarre inconvenient form of email combined with a small loss of privacy.

Re: Social networking sites

TURNING and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Re: Social networking sites

I like facebook. It can be totally private. The only people I have on my list are personal friends and relatives. Nobody else can see me at all. Lets me keep in touch since my entire family and all of my friends are 5000km's away.

I made contacts with bands, labels, venues and publishers via MySpace and Facebook. Depending on what you do for a living it can be a valuable business tool.

Re: Social networking sites

Myspace is a little cheesy, but its a good spot to advertise your music for free.

Facebook originally started out as a University thing. You had to have a degree to sign up. People complained and they opened it up to the public. It gets a little ridiculous with all the 'apps' they have, but everyone I ever knew is spread out all over the world, and its good to be able to keep in touch on Facebook.

Myspace has spammers, stalkers, bots and other stuff that make it pretty weak. Facebook is totally locked down. You can 'find' me using my email address, but you can't see anything about me, or view my pictures, music, events, or anything unless I allow you to.

I check the damn thing about once every week, but it's a good thing to have.

Re: Social networking sites

I'm 14 and all of my friends have Facebook. People are always asking me to make one, so annoying. I don't have Im either.

People can talk to me over Vent/Steam/Skype and online games though >.<

Re: Social networking sites

Social Networking sites? I'm hatin' on 'em and refuse to participate. There's already way to much information out there about us - and many willing to broker it for a couple bucks (or less)! Just my 2 cents.

Re: Social networking sites

Don't bother.

You'll find it taking up too much of your time against your own will. I've tried it and I've gone back.

E-mail works just fine for me.

Re: Social networking sites

If I were a teacher, I would not be on myspace. Facebook seem a bit safer and easier to control. I get spam 5-10 times daily on myspace.
