Buying my boyfriend his first LP. Help?

I'm new here and need some help. I've decided to buy my boyfriend an Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus for Christmas this year and need some opinions. First off, I was hoping for some pictures of the 2009 model in Cherry Sunburst, Honeyburst and Vintage Sunburst and also your opinions on what color to get. I've read that the Honeyburst varies in color and I'd like to see some recent shots. Also does anyone have experience with zZounds? The only reason I want to purchase from them is because they have the "Play as you pay" installment plan. Any other valuable information would be greatly appreciated.

On a side note. Any ideas on how to give him the guitar? We usually spend Christmas Eve together at my parent's house with all of my family and sticking it under the tree would be a tad too obvious. I was thinking of wrapping up some kind of LP accessory (keychain, pin, etc.) and then bring out the real guitar. Any ideas gentlemen?

Re: Buying my boyfriend his first LP. Help?

Mine aren't 2009 Models, but they haven't changed that much.

Keep in mind, this honeyburst has a different neck pickup (no chrome cover) and the finish was dulled because it had some deep gouges I had to repair.

Re: Buying my boyfriend his first LP. Help?

As for what color, I love the VSB, and its a fairly consistent color, unlike the Honeyburst and Cherry Sunburst.

I'm pretty sure zZounds is an alright place to deal with, but I've never personally dealt with them. I'm not sure how Sweetwater.com works on the credit plan, but they show you real pictures of the guitar you're ordering, so that's an idea.

And to give it to him, if I were you, I'd go to the jewelry store and get a ring box, then I'd pull off one of the control knobs (pretty simple procedure if you've never done it) and put that in the box and wrap it up.

Good luck!

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the welcome! That's a great idea about the knob. I just don't want to have the guitar under the tree so something small that leads to it is what I'm going for.

Sweetwater also has a payment plan but it's 3 payments instead of 4 and I'd like to spread it out a bit more.

Or maybe I can put a pick in a ring box and ask him to play me a song on his new guitar.

I get ya. I just think the knob idea would be awesome because he'd be like "what the crap?"

Oh, and make sure you report back here with pics, we love the whole family thing around here... just recently (like a couple of days ago), a member finished building a small scale Les Paul for his daughter. Good stuff.

It's terribly easy, especially if you have a low output power sander like a Black and Decker mouse. I went a lot farther down than most people because there were some seriously deep gouges in the poly, like someone had played speed metal with a butter knife on it.

What a cool girlfriend!

The switch tip is easy to unscrew and screw back on. If you want multiple teasers there's also the cavity covers that you can unscrew and the pickguard. Don't lose the screws though - safest thing is to screw them back into the guitar.

wow.. well hey if things dont work out..... lol

no seriously that sounds like a great gift. be sure though that hes not the type that needs to play an instrument before he likes it. if thats the case it could make the whole issue harder.

Re: Buying my boyfriend his first LP. Help?

I love what you're doing, TenYearsGone.

As for the package ... my suggestion: wrap the switchtip! It just screws off (it's the plastic tip on the bit that's inside the ring that says "RHYTHM/TREBLE" - if you are a player, too, please, take no offense!). The knobs are a great idea, but the switchtip would be easier. Put it in an oversized box. Better yet, a series of boxes, one inside the other, with the switchtip in the last one. He opens one, pulls out the next, opens that one ... have fun, whatever you do!

(edit) WHOOPS! paulygates beat me to it! Hilarious!

Lol. I know he'd love a Gibson LP but it's out of my price range at the moment. His cousin has a Gibson Black Beauty that he's played (she doesn't even play guitar) and he's played the Epi LP as well so I know he'd be okay with it.

I'm not a player so instructions do help! My mom actually used to do series of boxes when I was a kid so we wouldn't know what was inside. She also weighed clothing boxes down with magazines so my brothers wouldn't think it was a video game. Lol.

Re: Buying my boyfriend his first LP. Help?

Epi's are pretty consistently good, solid guitars, aren't they? It's a good caution to bear in mind - but it's a pretty safe bet he'll appreciate it.

well if hes really looking for a gibson, have you thought of maybe a Vintange Mahogany? you can get one for roughly $100 more than an Epi.

as quill said Epiphone does make a great guitar, and they are quite consistent. i have had a few myself.
i am just playing a little devils advocate here and giving you some other insight.

Re: Buying my boyfriend his first LP. Help?

My wife took me to Dexter Music Center in Dexter, MO for our anniversary one year, gave me a budget and told me to get what I wanted.

Considering the way us men can sometimes be moronic, pig-headed tools, it's nice the women in our lives still treat us better than we deserve.

Epis, like most guitars, are hit and miss. But I'm sure Ten will get it sometime before Christmas so if there are major issues she can send it back and get it exchanged.

If there are any major issues they'll pay for return shipping and exchange it. I've read mostly positive things about zZounds so hopefully everything will be okay.

Yeah, most of them have a satisfaction thing too, so if you get it within so long of Christmas and he just can't connect with it he can ship it back and try another. Wonderful thing, even if it can be drawn out sometimes. But I'm sure he'll love it based on principle.

Well, I've been married 5 years and I have two kids, I don't have the energy to pretend I'm perfect.

Good to know. I love the Cherry and the Honey but I like the Honeys that are darker around the perimeter. The only thing I don't like about the Vintage is that you lose the grain on the back.

Btw, I like the youtube videos. I must admit though that I like Train Kept a Rollin' performed by The Yardbirds better.
